Cranks wont turn over help

I have a 93 gsx. The other day I started my car and got some smoke from behind the stereo. Now my car will crank but wont turn over. Since its cranking I assume my starter relay is good, and I hear clicking which I think means my MPI/ignition relay is good. I also have a few exposed wires behind the stereo as well.

I would appreciate anyone who could shed some light on this. Thanks.

Sounds like the ECU is fried. Pull it and check it out.

is that the big bronze box in the back of the stereo? How can I tell if its toast?

Yeah, think there is four screw holding the cover on. And if its blown the ECU will smell nasty... almost a fishy smell.

Yup, just unbolt the big bronze box and pull the cover off. If theres burn marks, leaks, odd smells, etc - its fried.

right now im just trying to pull the yellow cables off of it, those things are in there! Is there a latch or something?

You did disconnect the battery, right?

Some of the cables may have latches or push tabs, cant remember off hand.

Disconnect the battery then pull down on the three yellow connectors. ( There is a tab in the middle of each one, you have to push in on.)

There are four bolts holding it in ( two on each side).

Do you know what the wires behind the stereo that are exposed go too? Are they radio wires or wires that going into the yellow connectors that plug into your ecu?

I would check all the fuses as well.

Make sure you take care of any wiring problems if you find any, before you try another ecu!

What would cause an ECU to explode like that? This was right after I replaced a 30a ignition fuse.

It sounds like in you case a shorted wire. Luckily that blown fuse gives you a good hint on which circuit to check.

My bet is you had a wire chafe until it shorted then when you went to start the car the ECU shit the bed because of the high current draw through the short.

any preparation advice before the new ECU goes in?

well just replaced the ecu, still cranks and wont turn over, however no smoke in the cabin, a step in the right direction I suppose ...
