Hello everyone, as the title states my car is cranking but is not getting spark. its a 1996 eclipse 2.0 DOHC non turbo 5 speed. i bought this car for $200 and saved it from the scrap yard. im having some trouble diagnosing whats wrong with is. It already has a new coil pack on it and has been checked out to be fine. here is my problem the wires to the coil, cam sensor, and crank sensor have been cut and im almost 100% wired up right from the tests i have done with a multi meter, but at the same time im not sure because it refuses to get spark. it does however get fuel from what i can smell from the cylinders when cranked over. i have read and read about these same problems of these cars. any help would be apreciated... from what i can tell its either , ECU, cam sensor, crank sensor, asd relay maybe?

well after a couple more hours in the garage and ohming (if thats a word) every square inch of wire in the engine bay i found nothing i didnt already know. after loosing all hope i did notice the battery connection to a couple wires more or less sucked, so i fixed that problem, cranked the motor no spark still. finally i looked at the timing using the old screwdriver trick in the cylinder to find TDC i then found both cams were 4 teeth off, used some black magic skills to get the cams in line at TDC and poof after all hope was lost, went and cranked it up, she hit first try :thumb:. shes still running rough right now but it does RUN. it is running on 3 year old nasty gas. plugs went from new to black as a coal train and wont throw any codes. could that be from the old gas causing it to sound like its missing?

Good that you got it running, I would honestly let it sit and run all that gas out, or even just turn the key and drain it out the line if possible.

I would then install fresh gas and fuel filter with new plugs. Hopefully see how she runs then.

4 teeth off is actually a good amount to be off by. Hopefully you did not do any damage to the valves. If you are worried about that at all just do a compression test on each cyl and report the readings.

thats the plan for now is just run the nasty gas out and best i could tell turning the motor over by hand and looking at the rockers with the valve cover off it appeared they werent hitting just holding the valve open enough to not run. also i plan on cleaning up the throttle body today and taking a look at those sensor

finally got the key dance trick to work because i dont have a code reader. CEL codes came up 12 43 55. says i have a missfire which i already knew. just dont know which ones and where to start again

Key dance only says misfire (43) but a scanner will tell you which cylinder (P030x). Take to Autozone and have them read out the P codes.

You might also consider disconnecting the fuel filter (by the tank on a NT) and running the gas out there into a gas can (with key on to run fuel pump).

yea i plan on flushing the fuel system and new fuel filter and what not, goin to get a scanner hooked up too see what actual code it is throwin. im thinking the timing is still a fair bit off but i cant tell completely without pullin the motor.

UPDATE: finally got the thing on a code reader. once again i was less than happy with the results, getting a P0300 code multiple cylinder miss fire. heres what i know from reading tons of dsm forums, can be the upstream 02, timing, crank sensor, EGR , coil and or wires...

heres what i already know for sure, have all spark to all cylinders, when hot and cold the coil ohms out exactly the same for both sides, the EGR is fine isnt throwin code for it and checked all conections, no vaccume leaks, compression seems fine but cant really check it with the plugs being so far down

went to the salvage yard today picked up a whole crap ton of sensors from a donor 2.0 420a. got home replaced the cam sensor, map, egr, upstream 02, and thought i grabbed the right ecu but didnt oh well its $20 for all of it. after all of that i managed to get rid of my CEL code 43 (random cylinder miss fire) and now only have a CEL code 31.... i have read and read about this freakin code. and nobody knows how to fix it. heres what i do know though, the evap valve thingy with 2 lines going in it was in upside down, a random hose appeared from the canister and wasnt connected to the back of the manifold. also the big round valve (hooked to the canister) the top line is broke off. also the car will idle now sort of, it randomly surges now like its trying to find idle and then it will stop that and try to die. would a CEL 31 cause this???? i need help

no need to help or diagnose anymore. the eclipse fixed it own problem. ran completely fine for a whole minute then prematurely detenated when i hit 3rd gear just driving it normal :hellyeah: needless to say this hunk of crap is going where alot of other 420a's end up. the salvage yard :thumb:. thanks to anyone who helped me diagnose the problems and provided input. :D
