cracked head, fixable?

hey guys, i was driving to work this morning and the car started overheating on the highway. It had a leak so i put water in the radiator then on the way home it started over heating again so when i got home i looked around and found a small crack about the thickness of a hair and about a 1/4" long.. is it fixable?

As cheap as heads are, I would just buy another one for $150. Rates for custom fabrication here start around $75 an hour.

what do they do to it? i get huge discounts at a machine shop. imma have to drive over there later.. i just want to know if its even fixable.

First you weld it, then you resurface the warped surface, then you decide to do a valve job while it's off (which you should), then you still have issues... Get a different head.

cylinder heads are cheap enough nowadays that you shouldn't bother having that crack fixed. just get another one.

I would get another head, keep looking at the market place for a good price. I picked mine up for 100 bux off here.

It would be different if you had some insane porting you didn't want to get rid of...but there are bare stock head cores in the classifieds all the time for $50-$75. Get one of those, take it to your machine shop where you get all the discounts- have them deck it, swap the valves from your head over, and install new seals. Good for another 150K.

You must of gotten that thing very hot. I had a beater non turbo 4g63 that i drove over 10 miles in the red and didn't even crack the head. Was there actually coolant coming from this crack? Also where was the crack located? There are only a few places externally on the head that cooling could leak thru if cracked. 99 percent of the time it will happen in the combustion chamber or runners.

I see cores all over the place for cheap, get one and rebuild it, easy enough, i never had a cracked head, but i used to have several cores back in the day.
