Cracked 1g mani, ebay tubular mani good?

Both my cars manifolds have cracks, actually more than one crack a piece. im not sure if they leak or not but would a tubular manifold off ebay suit my needs? I have the stock TD05 and i can get a tubular one for around 110 so i figured id ask. Thanks

His car is completely stock (according to his profile). It would be a bit silly to shell out that kind of money for an externally gated EM that provides nothing but a bit of bling...along with higher under-hood temperatures.

OP - Just find a used Mitsu OEM 2g (or Evo 3) exhaust mani in good condition and call it a day.

@Ryan's post below - Agreed; the FP mainfold is very nice (see my avatar ). But the OP is apparently FAR from needing to invest $200+ in an exhaust manifold.

IMO, tubular manifold are not for DAily Driving, and shouldbe made my a professiona who can produce good solid welds. Most high end tublar manifold have a lifetime warranty for a reason. And support our vendors, dont go ebay (i know some of our vendors have ebay stores). You are better off with an EVO3 cast manifold and a 2g, both can be had under 200 dollars.

I know almost everybody is the "name-brand" or nothing type, but I have been running my eBay exhaust manifold for over 20,000 miles with no problem at all. I think it's sort of a hit or miss kinda thing, but it seems to be well worth the money to me. Although for anything else such as a turbo charger or any part that if breaks, means catastrophic failure, then I tend to stick to the known good parts. So, its not going to kill your car if an exhaust manifold fails, I would give it a shot.

Then you are one of the exceptions. Welded eBay manifolds are notorious for using thin metal and inferior welds.

And... there is no reason for it on a stock car. The 2G manifold can be had for $50-$100 used, and has been proven time and time again to work great up to 400+ hp especially with a little porting. It's got a higher nickel content than the crappy 1G manifolds, and is therefore a lot less prone to cracking. The Evo 3 is identical to the 2G but is even more durable, and is already "ported" for 7cm turbo inlets.

I've got a hunch that there are at least 50 other things to spend that money on, that would be a much better investment in his car.

2G manifold is a direct-fit replacement with a thicker casting and larger runners than a 1G manifold.

Yeah, like I said, it's usually a hit or miss, if hes not going to be pulling out any crazy high horsepower I dont see why it would fail, but I just got mine because I was broke and needed a manifold, and the ebay tubular ones were cheaper than the oem replacements. I was going to get the FP one later, but figure, why when this one seems to work fine. haha

True... unless he just likes the look of it. which I might add too, that don't expect the thing to look shiny past 30 seconds of running it. that thing rainbowed out within the first minute of idling and then turned bronze after the first drive. it turns unbelievabley hideous after the first week. haha and heat shields dont fit on them

I wasnt going to run with a heat shield. but if its just going to brown out im going to look into a 2g mani. im looking for around 3-350 hp. and when porting do i just widen the paths or the outlet?

You'll definitely want to run a heat shield if possible. As for porting, it isn't really necessary for your power goals, but there are many threads on it here that will help you out.

Pros and cons of no heat shield?

Pros - Eight less bolts to remove if you need to take off the exhaust manifold, and you can cook an egg on your hood if the need ever arises.

Cons - melted fans/wiring, higher IAT's, possible damaged paint, O2 sensor wire sitting on EM, looks a little silly without it since it was designed for one, lower turbo efficiency, etc.

If you are dead set on not running a heat shield for some reason, look into ceramic (or even better: titanium ceramic) coating for the EM and O2 housing.

I had a heat shield, melted my slimfan wires. Sold it quick after that.

Use them both. Your fans and lower wiring will take a beating without the lower one. Manifold heat wrap works pretty well, but it can be difficult (if not impossible) to get a good wrap on a stock manifold. The heat shields are much simpler, work better, and IMO look much better.
