COP Coil-on-Plug ignition [Merged 1-8]

I have a msd dis 2 plus with tach adapter that I was gonna sell to get a dsi 4 because that made more sense you figure 4 coils dis 4 but everyone seems to say dis 2 with COP is the way to go. Is there any advantage of running dis 4 or dis 2 with COP. I will have a plug and play COP setup that plugs right into the stock harness and will be using EMS

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a COP kit in a 1g with a Dynatek ARC2 ignition???

Thanks

Well i know this is old but i must say what a difference. I would suggest this to anyone who has a coil or plug wires that are going bad. I made mine for free but i couldn't imagine it being more than 50 bucks if you are on a budget which is less than any nice set of plug wires.. Im pushing 22 psi on a 16g and before i couldn't push 18 psi without it missing on my coil and wire set up.. I might up it to 24 with race gas at the shootout..

I love the COP

I picked up the ebay COP setup for a 90 and saw that the wires were labeled so I was like ok cool who needs the instructions but after hooking up the wires on the end I notice that there are 3 more wires with spade connectors on them lebled red white and yellow. Ayone know where thos three go to? There were obviously designed to connecto to something else but I can't firgure out where other than maybe the power pack

Edit: Nvm I found the instructions it says they go to the tacho interface box

You do need to run aftermarket ignition with all c.o.p. setups or it will lead to random cylinder misfirings, etc...

You're better save yourself the money and sticking stock ignition, NGK spark plugs, and wires unless you're intended on going 600hp+ where ignition is a factor.

depends on the coils.

Just to let people know.. I pushed 25psi on my 16g to a 12.60 with no other ignition system adder.. I am running 24psi with my holset without a miss.. My plugs are gapped at .027

I'm not saying it won't work, either... it's just that the dwell time is longer on the Chrysler coils vs. OEM, so the math would indicate that the Chrysler coils are not an upgrade. Your plug gap is supposed to be .028-.32, and a wider gap is better for ignition if you can make the spark to bridge the gap.

If spark ever becomes a problem with your setup, check into the Dynatek ARC-2 multi-spark CDI. You can get it specifically for your year DSM with a plug-n-play harness for HALF of what the MSD box costs [without the $80 tach signal module]. It's literally a 3 wire install and comes with a well-thought-out bolt-in mounting bracket. I would suggest it for anyone that has problems after doing this upgrade, or who plans to push 30-40+PSI on Chrysler coils because you can set the gap anywhere you want, [EDIT] or who doesn't have DSMlink and wants a 2-stage rev-limiter[/EDIT]. It's the highest-output CDI box available for our cars.

The timeslip link under my avatar was a big16g/550's with a factory coil pack.

Well I will just test my COP set up to the max when i build my motor and go to E85 and let people know the results.. .027 is a very reasonable gap btw.. I used one of those cheapy ramp styles so that is an estimation.. I will go to a ARC-2 when i hit my limit but until then ill save that 350..

Dont know how this is. Your stock coils must have been going bad, I have junkyard coils and igniter with off the shelf wires and plugs and run 40psi on a e316g with no problems. My tune is fairly good though. this is on a 1990 setup.

Just fixed all my misfiring-under-boost issues. It turned out to be caused by HOW the boots were trimmed. I haven't found any information about trimming them, so I made another COP video covering what worked for me to clear it up. The old boots actually did mash down over the plugs' insulators but the spark leaked through it under boost... which made it impossible to find while looking under the hood for something wrong.

I have a Dynatek, but still had problems both with it & without it... I even gapped to .025" without affect on the problem. Once I finally corrected the real issue and then re-installed the Dynatek, I'm running .036" gap. With the dynatek box, I had a rough idle when using a .028"-.32" gap. Opening it up fixed it which seems a little strange to me. I know I couldn't get away with it without the CDI, but the difference between before/after the different cut with new boots was like yen and yang. Thanks to all the people that posted great info in this forum, I feel like I have a pretty decent ignition system. I'm just putting it out there to give it back.

This video applies to people both WITH and WITHOUT a CDI amplifier. Enjoy.

Nevermind guys I dug a little deeper and found it... thx

I found a 90 diagram but the same diagram is also on talk with somebody saying the wiring diagram is wrong, does anybody have any other diagram(s) I can look at ? remember this is for a 90

If you actually read this whole thread you'll find the answer. The issue is the fourth pin on the connector and if you understand the different between a 90 and 91 standard setup you have 99% of what you need to know.

There is also a cookbook answer. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/bol...ug-ignition-merged-1-8-a-5.html#post151314910

Double checking it ensures you understand how it works in case you have problems.

I ended up using the 91 + diagram and tapped into the signal wires, it was easy enough... its weird that the 90 diagram shows the wiring done different and only has 12v going to one coil may (may need revision) thats why I wanted to see a different diagram.
