Ok, so I got home yesterday and when I got out of my car, I heard this "knocking" sound coming from under the hood, It seems like it is coming from the bottom end on the driver side engine department. It's not like a bearing knock or tink but it almost could sound like a bad water pump or something like that, but thats only got 20k on it, Is it possible it could be the harmonic balancer? possibly separating from the crank pulley? What ever it is it is very consistant and never changes the tone of sound. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dylan

P.S. If I can figure out how to upload the video of the noise, I will do so ASAP

Mine makes a similar sound, but it stays the same when you rev the motor. It wasn't like that before, but it just started after replacing the waterpump and timing belt/components.

Might be indeed the harmonic balancer or a pulley wobbling.

That sounds like a rod to me. I would drain the oil and check for metal shavings. You could also cut open the filter.

How many miles did you put on all the timing components and waterpump before you got this noise? All my timeing, waterpump, alternator and that stuff was done 20k ago

As soon as i started my car up it started making the noise, so id say 0 miles.

But it doesn't get louder when you rev it.

It sounds like a bearing cause it gets louder as you rev the motor.

Other problems that are minor are sometimes a bad harmonic balancer or timing belt auto tensioner.

Check your oil, might be a bearing or balance shaft.

Did you run your motor low on oil? rev it real high in neutral? I mean these are the usual reasons why our motors spin bearings.

So do you think mine could be a rod then?

You should drain your oil out and check for metal shaving first. I just bought a project car 97 GST last weekend and had the same problem. The ticking was not bad until the car warm up, after that it started knocking. I tore the engine apart and found the bearing on the number 2 cylinder all chew up.

Ok well I checked it out and Im about positive its not a rod knock nor the idler pulley. It sounds like the water pump is going bad on me. Does that sound possible?

I have never heard a water pump knock, but I can be wrong. If the water pump is going it would make a squealing noise from my own experince.

Thats a rod. Keep driving it and it will lock up or sling the rod out the side of the block.

No the oil change was fresh on sept 26th. ams oil. And the oil looks fine and is still full. I think it might be a idler pulley. I'm gonna check into more after work and I'll let you guys know.

The oil will look fine on the dipstick. You have to drain it to be able to see any metal shavings.

Well I'm about 99% sure now thats its not in the block. It really definately sounds like a water pump bearing to me. I've heard plenty of water pumps sound similiar to this. Its definately coming from under the timing cover though.

Take the belts off the water pump and try moving the piece that connect to the pulley around, if the bearing is shot it should have a lot of play in it.

My 1994 talon had a similar noise that would go away and come back again, mostly at idle, after taking a look at the timing belt cover i could see the alternator belt was rubbing through it:notgood:. I watched the belt while the engine was running and could see it wobbling slightly from left to right, turned out the harmonic balancer took a dump. I replaced it and have not had a problem since, like previously stated take a good look around that area. Good luck :thumb:
