A couple months ago my car developed a knocking sound when I turn if off. It doesn't do it when running to any degree. It's just when I turn it off.

What's the first thing I should check out? What could it be?

Thanks

EDIT: It's the 420a 2.0L GS.

Also valve springs have a tendency to make a knock or a ping noise after you shut the car off. But yeah try to narrow it down and do check your motor/tranny mounts

The worst part about that is I wouldn't even know where to begin to change them.

I wouldn't worry about that yet, step one is to identify the source of the noise (your mounts may be fine). As said, you need someone to help you -- one of you gets to stick his head in the engine compartment while the other shuts down the engine (probably several times).

I tried to listen a bit more closely to where the sound is coming from today. It SEEMS to be coming from the driver's side.

Not to take away from the op but my 96 GSX does the same thing but only about once a week. About 5 to 10 min after i shut he car off it makes a slow, deliberate tapping sound for 30 sec the it gets very rapid for a few seconds and stops. A minute later it goes thru this cycle again and this goes on for about 20 mins. To make matters more weird sometimes when i go to start the car it will barely idle until I give it gas. And the last time this happened it took about 10 min to start the car.

As I said originally this happens once a week, sometimes less, and i drive it everyday.
