computer chip

A buddy of mine has a '98 eclipse 5 speed manual 2.0 DOHC. He's interested in putting a computer/ECM chip in it. What are some good chips, prices, and places to purchase? His budget is around $250. Thanks in advance!

You need to find out which model he has first. Some of the models (the factory turbos and 2.4L NAs) have a Mitsubishi engine and some have a Chrysler engine (2.0L NA).

The Mitsubushi powered cars have the option of a factory ECU/ECM that can be chipped or you can run various standalong aftermarket ECU/ECMs like the AEM EMS.

Guess what. Both the turbocharged Mitsubishi 2.0L 4G63 and the non-turbo Chrylser 2.0L 420A are DOHC engines.

I wouldn't bet against you.

You'll notice that there is now a budget that would just cover a 2G EPROM ECU but not the chip to go with, much less a DSMLink or AEM. One might be able to get into a Megasquirt on a 420A but I doubt the OP or the owner are up for any sort of standalone on either platform.

I know Jet makes a controller called the V Force. Ill check the price and post it. I had it on my 99GS and It's a decent upgrade. Looks like its about 300.00 bucks. For that price I would just do a Safc. Thats my opinion. For what that or the Venom Chip will cost it will give you alot more to go with the safc.

That's a good chip but it's not for his car. It's only for the turbo cars.

The 420A has a different computer than the 4G63 cars.

You'll note that what you looking for it the last things on the upgrade list for a 2G NT car.

His car is all stock. Is your eclipse a 1st gen. and his a 2nd gen.? So in terms of a computer chip/upgrade, there really isn't much for his ride then?

For an all stock car, you'd be better off doing other mods like exhaust, intake, header, etc. A chip won't do anything without mods on a stock car. DSMs are not Hondas, they don't NEED to be chipped.
