doing a full rebuild on my 99 gst. i currently have the whole engine out in pieces, and have a second block thats already .20 over. im waiting for my wiseco pistons to come in then im sending everything out to a machine shop out here. My goal for this car is 375-450hp.. 10-11 second @ 1/4. I dont consider myself a newbie but this is my first time pulling out a motor.

here are the parts that i have:
16g turbo
aem fuel rail
fic 650cc injectors
precision intercooler
aeromotive fpr kit
AEM tru-boost gauge/controller
apexi safc2
AEM wideband
walbro 255 fuel pump

i also am going to throw in some BC 272/272's and fidanza cam gears.

i would also like to know if i can reuse my crank and rods(still in good shape) or if i should just get them new?

so i guess my questions are:

what other parts do i need to achieve my goal?

would a 16g hold up to that range or should i look for a bigger turbo?

would you reccomend the safc2 or just go with the dsmlink and gm maf?

what exactly do i tell the guys at the machine shop to do?....because i know theres issues with shaving your crank and all these clearence problems and which bearings to go with.

i want to get it right the first time. so please any advice will help out very much.

thank you for your time.

I would highly recommend getting tha crank rebalanced and micropolished. As for Turbo and tuning, I would either recommend an Evo III 16G or 20G (if you want to stay with decent size). You can make some good power out of tha 16G if you use it right. If you want some more flow, get it ported. You should be able to use your SAFC II if you're on a budget and get a GM MAF+T to go with it, but tha only thing with tha translator is if you go to different altitudes, it will throw your tune off. If anything I would go with DSMLink, but if funding isn't there, have your translator preset for your injector size and zero out everything else and do your tuning directly from your SAFC. Also, get a logger so you know what is going on with everything.

I don't know about tha pistons, but if anything you could get them coated.

You will want a bigger turbo to achieve your goal if you mean high 10 sec/low 11sec. Unless you have an auto, you will need about 125-130 trap for high 10s. (give or take a little, but based on full weight and average shifting using a rough calculation and looking at the 1/4 mile times here. DSM 1/4 Mile Times - 1/4 ET) Thats about 500-550whp.

If you have a stock 7 bolt, then you should be looking into getting some h-beam rods. I just ran into a recent thread where a set let go at about 380ish whp.

I would go with dsmlink and the 2g MAS if fine for 500ish HP. Should have gotten bigger injectors for that HP. Sell them and get at least 950s IMO.

You need to search some build threads here to answer your machining questions specifically. Especially search some tech threads started by bogusSVO.

Don't get your crank cut, only get it polished. If they say it needs turned, then go find a good virgin used crank.

I would run ACL race series tri-metal main & rod bearings for that HP range.

The machine shop will bore the block and set the piston-to-wall clearance that you specify. The Wiseco card will call for .0025, which will turn into .003 after the coating wears off the skirt. Some like to run them looser for higher HP applications. .0035 or .004.

You will want ARP head studs and a good HG. Some are having good luck with a composite OEM & ARPs for around that HP level. I went with a Mitsu MLS. You will need to get the block & head decked to a near mirror finish for proper sealing of an MLS.

Awwww shit. I just saw that you are FWD after all that. Get a laggy turbo or run slicks to get a 10.

thats what i was leaning more to, saving up a little longer and just doing the stand alone. im not really on a budget i plan to have my car sitting for a while but a little saving on the way would be nice :) as for the turbo i was just planning on porting it out but if im taking a chance on maxing it out and blowing it ill just save for a larger turbo. I planned on boosting about 18-21 on the 16g but an upgraded turbo may be in my future so who knows how much ill exactly be boosting.

I just spoke to my father who is a mechanic and told me the same thing that Boost_Addict_88 said, get it balanced and micropolished so that looks to be the route ill be taking.

Of course arp main and head studs are going to be put on, theres no other option for me :)
as for the head gasket i was thinking cometic or possibly felpro

the pistons have already been ordered: EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Wiseco Forged Pistons w/ Rings (8.3:1 C.R.): 92-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse 7-Bolt

i just hope the shop knows exactly what to do when i hand it over to them. as for the rods i may just go on a hunt for some from a 1st gen.

thank you guys for your advice every little bit helps.

bring on more opinions :)

Your going to need more then that to go 10's even more so in a FWD but the rest looks good. Id look at a 20G, 50 trim, hx35, ect ect for 450hp range. Wiseco is the way to go but if your doing pistons and have it apart get rods too. Also forget 650's and jump to 1000's sense you will have a way to tune it. Why buy twice? Other then that it sounds good.

If you have a 99 according to your profile I'd sell the SAFC for money towards a Openport 2.0 cable, the stock 98/99 ecu can be tuned a lot more precisely and specific then a SAFC with ECUflash software which is free :). You should also be looking into a lsd and some nice stickys to get your fwd in the 10's.

i actually thought about trying the awd drive conversion but i wouldnt know exactly what to do and i dont think i can pour out that kind of money to do it right now. the lsd and slicks will most likely be added on later in time for i wont be out at a track for a while until i have all my suspension done.

i should probably add that its not gonna be a complete drag car. just my daily street driven beast that will head out to the track every once in a while. :) i would enjoy pulling up to a srt-4 and have it starring at my ass a 1/4 mile down the road.

right now im just focusing on the motor and getting all the right parts i need to have it running right. especially when it comes down to the electronic side of it. now i may need to worry about searching around for a larger turbo.

whatever it takes to reach my goal and getting the most out of my motor. i want it to have a long life.

would you guys reccomend an egt gauge? im not sure if its NECCESSARY. maybe just oil temp?
