Does it have to be 2001?

No. you can put in whatever year you want. The search engine is also smart enough to fnd all direct matches and compatible matches. It finds a lot of 3.2L, but I am not sure if they use th same exact coils. It is COP, but not sure if it is the same. It says it's compatible though so maybe.

I am wondering if anybody has a working 300m setup on a 1G, just to prove its possible, or has anybody seen one using 300m parts? i work at a cadillac dealer, and im friends with the guys at the dodge dealer across the street, i will try and get some wiring diagrams, and tell you what i find.
does it matter what year 300m?, could u use 3.5liter intrepid coils? are they the same?
i will try and find some diagrams, i will post a little later tonight with any info i find....

hey i just figured i would post some info i found yesterday on alldata. i found that a 99 and newer 300m have the coils we want.....and they work the same way our normal coils do. so there really isnt any reason that this conversion shouldnt work. all you do is splice the signal wire from each of our coils into 2 wires, so from two original signal wires, now you have 4. these are the signal wires for the new coils. the other wire appears to be battery voltage as far as i can see........? (coming from the ecu ofcourse)
im not 100% sure, but dsm's use the waste spark system correct? if so, everything works on paper. the only question is : do our ecu's send enough power to make and break the contacts in the coils?
thats all i got for today
im spent

jeremy that is great that is just what i needed. each coil needs to have 12 volts applied to it. that one wire left over has to go to all of the coils to power them. th two wires are the signale wires to tell the coils hen to fire it is brillant if you ask me

Anyone want to make me one for a fee? Give me an estimate of how much it will cost, parts and labor, and Ill pay for it. Im not too confident in doing projects.

anyone wanna take me up on the offer? Ill pay for the parts and labor. Just quote me a total price.

If you really don't feel like making one, and mine turns out nice and works as advertised, I'll make you one. Coils, wiring, mounting plate, everything.... will run you $325 shipped... $275 if you ship me back your coil. However, there are conditions.... I guaratee that it will be tested and work on my cars (i'll put it on both to be sure). Once it is shipped, I'll insure it, I am not laible for anything.

It all depends on how mine works out. I'l let you know hopefully on Saturday how it works out.

Sounds like a plan. Let me know how yours works. In the mean time, Ill do some homework and try to figure out to make one as well.

Update -

Some people are reporting that after a few minutes, the car stops running and will not restart until the stock coil packs have been re-installed.

On my car, it developed a miss-fire around 4k rpms. Above and below that, it is fine.

Pending some furthur testing... I suggest people refrain from doing this mod.

The stock coils for the 1st gens I think have a condenser and a tach interface built into them. This could cause a problem. I think you need to have the waste spark set up. The ECU can see the coils fire. You could run 2 coil on plug with jumpers that are not very long from a 2.4L Mitsu.

I was curious if any of the people, especilly HAL, who have tried this have measured the primary coil resistance, at the three pronged plug. I hooked up a set of Jaguar COP's and they worked the same in all RPM ranges. My problem was as soon as I stepped on it it literally blew out the flame. The primary resistance was measured at .5 ohms compared to my stockers at 1.2 ohms. I have a hard time believing these coils are not strong enough for a little boost. I wasn't even reaching two psi before it was misfirng. I stopped experimenting due to time restraints right now. I was wondering If I played with a resistor to emulate the resistance of the original coil pack would this work. I thought the car idled smoother with the COP setup.

Its simple- you need a coil designed for the rather high factory dwell times, otherwise they will overheat.

Didn't we discuss this Hal? Those Chrysler COP ignition systems I don't ever recall seeing even 50% of the dwell time, normally used on this Mitsubishi application, off the DRB-III scanner and scope. They were never intended for more than 2-2.5ms dwell. THEY WILL OVERHEAT AND FAIL.

say,300zx's have coil on plug-the turbo model's might be able to handle the longer dwell times-any nissan gurus in the crowd?I've tried the GM 2nd gen coil packs with no luck.Perfect under no boost but any boost missfired like crazy.i have a 90 model, isnt there something different about coils on 90's?i just straight wired it from the fact. wires and it worked just not under boost.accel makes alot of different upgrade coils so maybe they make something that would work in this application.

I have a coil on plug working on my car car but it is just 2 coils. Each coil has a jumper plug wire. Many cars use this set up. I got my parts from a Hyundai Sonata 2001 with a 2.4L mitsu motor Toyota and Suzuki also use this on some cars. You need to wire in the factory condensor but other than that it is just like our factory set up with 2 coils. But now you have a coil directly on cylinders 1 and 3 with jumpers to 2 and 4. It is still better that our stock set up IMO.

I have a turbo car. And the coils work fine. Also the coils for a 91 Laser with turbo or not part # MD158956

The tach control is built into the igniter not the coil pack, also with this setup and buschurs cop, you still have waste spark. This is individual coils but not sequential 4 channel ignition. I really can't see how this is any better than the stock coil pack. The only real way to get sequential ignition which is a huge improvement over wastespark is to get a new ecu, ie Motec. The haltech e6ks wont run 4 channel ignitions, only 2, if you want sequential injection, but am not sure about the AEM ECU though.

The Haltech E6K can do 4 channel ignition. I own one and have done this before with a MSD DIS4. Just wanted to clarify this.
