Coil On Plug [Merged 5-7]

Got my coils on the way. Thanks again Hal.

By the way, why do you need to remove the cap of the plug? From the pictures it looks like it would fit fine. Then again, that is just to get inside the boot. Is the conductive spring that tight inside?

Do you have any data on the output of these and how it compares to stock ignition?

You CAN shorten the spring and that will allow you to retain the plug cap.

Personal choice, nothing more.

Nice!!! Can you comment on the benefits of this?

Why would I want to do this on my DSM?

I'm a DSM rookie so take this for whatever you will, but it looks to me like you eliminate the plug wires all together, the coilpack has direct contact with the plug....

so you would eliminate the factory coilpack and power transistor. The coilpack has 3 pins connectot (4pins on 90). The power transistor has a 8 pins connector (5 pins on 90). Now where do connect or splice the connectors. Thanks.

VFAQ

Taken from the FAQ:

"Now we have to wire the coils up. First, unless your coils came with harness end connectors, you will need some .110 female spade connectors.

Solder a connector to a short length of wire, and then put heat shrink tubing over it.

Put two connectors on each coil and seal the joint with more heat shrink or electrical tape.

Place the coils onto the spark plugs, and run the coil +12 to one wire on EACH coil.

Take a coil trigger wire and connect it to the unused wire on the coils for cylinders 1 & 4. Connect the other trigger to the unused wires on the other two coils."

That is all the wiring you need to do. You retain the stock power transistor.

looks very similar to what Mr. Buschur sells/sold? but his costs a bit more. I wasn't too fond of the one set of COP I had to deal with. They were a real PITA to get off the plugs (all 4 at once) and they tended to come apart as you got the plate off. Lots of dielectric grease to keep the boots and springs from sticking to the plugs didn't help much. It was always scary to put the things back together and hope that the car started again. This was about a year ago, so Buschur may have a better product now or found a better solution. Can't argue that the part worked. It was just a PITA to get on/off the plugs when tuning.

Nice VFAQ btw. Have you had any of the problems I've mentioned? Tried to source any other small coils like this (i.e. stronger for more power).

As far as spark goes, how does this setup compare to a MSD ignition? Would this coil on plug setup contribute to a more complete burn?

i am a little unsure about the wiring. do you think you could set up some pics and or wire diagram. it would be very helpfull. thanks hal

Has anybody else tried this mod on a 1G? I installed the coils on my 91 Laser. Turned the key it fired right up, after about 5 minutes it started missing. I shut it off did a quick check under the hood and started it again took a lot more turns of the starter before it started, the tach was very erratic the miss was getting worse. Shut it off and tried starting it again had to crank a long time before it finally started tach still erratic, it idled about 30 seconds and died. Would not start back up. After some experimenting I found it would fire right up if I pulled a wire off one of the coils ( By saying one of the coils I mean any one of them as long as only three coils are plugged in it will start ) . With only three coils hooked up you can still tell that out of the three cylinders that are firing a couple of them are still misfiring occasionally. I fires right up the tach works right and runs a lot smoother ( as smooth as it's going to get on 2 cylinders ) if each signal wire is only firing one coil. Once its running with 1 coil per signal wire if I connect the other 2 coils it will run smooth on all four for about 15 seconds then it starts missing.

So anybody have any ideas before I go back to my old coil and wires?
I know this is kind of long but I was trying to give all the details.

THIS IS SUCH AN AWSOME IDEA. great idea now just don't let twitch steal it and start making kits from it. hehe But I want to try it now. DO you have to make a plate couldn't just mount them on top of the valve cover??

i real want to do this but i want it to work right. i have no problem with making the plate and getting the coils but the wiring worries me

well its certainly an interesting idea, but it seems that its more trouble than its worth, i mean, why would you want it, instead of changing your plug wires you might save money doing it this way, but junkyard parts?!? not on my dsm, and the coil packs new from a dealer would be between 50 and 100 bucks each so still no savings

sorry but im gonna wait till someone else does the dirty work on this one

I have seen this when Hal first wrote the how to on it.

I am all about it but before I do, I want to see some documented results. So far the only benefit I see is not having to replace wires. (i know the potential benefits just nothing has been proven yet.)

What do people that have coil-on-plug setups stock from the factory do for upgrades?

Are there better coils or anything like that?

Because, buying an upgraded system, and then rigging it to fit a DSM would be a good idea, and you wouldn't have to use junkyard parts. You'd get the benefits of the coil-on-plug, AND the benefits of the non-stock ignition system on top of it.

Anybody know what they use?

yes good point is those coil on plug system more powerful then the one we have right now with high quality wires??

true, I haven't seen the result, apparently our ignition system is good to 400 hp, but everything counts, if the 4 coil system is more powerful and works might be better choice.

actually if you have a coil right on top of a plug you have less resistence so you can get more volts to the plug. and with this setup you are looking at about 80 100'000 volts of electricity on a car with a dis you are looking at about 30 to 40 '000 vlots so i say you are geting a gain in performance.

i think the main advantage of upgrading to this set-up is to keep the stock spark plug gap at 0.032" when boosting 20 psi plus. As more compressed air entering the chamber, harder it is for the spark plug to bridge a spark. With my stock igntition system, I have to reduce the gap to 0.028" for high boosting. I guess this coil on the plug set-up suppose to let you keep stock gap or maybe even let you widen the gap for more capacitive charged spark.

What kind of coild do i need to do this, and were can i find them!??!! thanx, if in the future if i did this modification would i be able to runa MSD ignition???
