Cockiness: Friend or foe?

Yeah this is a sad, sad story. Please someone correct me if I am wrong for assuming this. My friend drives a 90 Talon FWD turbo with free mods, 2 1/2 in muffler, and running 12 psi on 14b. He stages up against a newer Mazda MX-6 um...94 i think. A female is driving (NO offense to any female drivers). I am riding passanger in the Talon and the two stage up. He turns to me and says, "Watch, I wont even launch." I smile knowing that the MX-6 has no chance. Flagger drops his hands, she launches and he starts normally. She immediately pulls half car on him. He is ripping through the gears and he manages to chew away a bit of her lead but at about 75 mph, she begins to pull back and ends up beating him by a fender. BTW all she had was intake and Pace Setter exhaust. Now I know that the lack of launch hurt him, but shouldn't he have pulled on the power of the V6?

Yeah I didn't think of that. He does have a speaker box in the Talon and I am 5'10", 215 lbs. So I guess it all comes together.

The 91-94's came with a 2.2L turbocharged engine, and the 94 up came with the v6...But I'm pretty sure the v6 comes with more than 164 hp. Plus your only running 12 psi with just a fey mods. Either way if she had a modded turbo, or V6 she would beat you, but by the way you say she pulled up top on you I'd say she was on the sauce.

hum...sounds kind of off to me. I wasn't aware that talon's came FWD in the year of 90, I have only seen 91 fwd, oh well, anyways. Mazda MX-6's are pretty good on top end. I really don't see how she would have pulled on the TSI though. 2 1/2 exhaust, free mods, and 12psi. Sounds like 14 second time slip's to me. you should look at the condition of the talon also though...Well then again, since your friend probably didn't experience wheel spine since he didn't launch hard, i'm confused. do it again and I am sure the dsm will rule this time around

I have seen a MX6 thats runs 15 flat get walked on the highway by a GSX with just an exhaust. Their top end is preety average. I walked the probe GT (same V6 as the MX6)bad on the highway back when all I had was exhaust.

Looks like in this situation it was Foe. It basically blew up in his face, and he had to walk away as the guy who got beat by the girl. A guy in his brand new EVO put money on a race around here and claimed he was gonna let his opponent lead until near the end. Well his Cockiness lost him a couple hundred.

I will NEVER look over ANY car that wants to line up against me. Even though people know my car, I don't really know most of them. I am new to the area. I don't car if it was an assclown in a Yugo, I am going balls out whenever cash is involved.

The 2.2 was offered only in the 1st gen...it was a torque monster compared to the later v6 but only had like 140-145hp. The v6s were faster in the quarter but were MUCH les torqueier. The v6s with those mods shoudl run like low 16s to high 15s. Oh and the only turbo fords/mazdas you should worry about are turbo coupe thunderbirds when your stock/mildly modded and svo's when you have a 14b/s16g, they have the venerable and torque monster 2.3 turbo. I drove in one that was very modded and OMFG!!. I still beat him in a street race basically stock but when he gets that motor in a stang notchback he looses 1000pounds and drops to looow 13s.

In other words your friend shoudla won.

I owned a probe GT , they have exactly 164HP , check out Probetalk.com , the MX6's are heavier and usually run 15.6 or so.
