Clutch slippage or transmission gone? (Video)

More than likely your clutch is TOASTED, but wether it's your tranny or just your clutch your gunna have to pull the tranny either way. So just get ready to pull the whole tranny, and be prepared to at least replace your clutch disk, pressure plate, flywheel, throwout bearing.

ITS YOUR CAR A GSX? if so, i had an axle brake and it popped out the tranny. and caused the same thing yours is doing..the control arm bushing was worn out and aloud the axle to move just enough to cause the problem. only move about 1inch but it was enough.

Could be a broken diff. That would seem like something that would make quite a noise and happen all of a sudden. To me a clutch isn't something that would just give out from grip to nothing instantly.

well.. i got the car on the 21st of december. i could tell something was wrong with the car but the guy told me i just needed to bleed the clutch lines. i was driving home on the interstate and 4th and 5th gear were acting just like 3rd did so i drove home going 80 in 3rd gear.. damn you $3 a gallon gas.. i got it back home and had a buddy of mine bleed the line but he's a complete moron and did it completely wrong. well it actually made it seem kind of better until later i realized there was no fluid in the cup (master/slave cylinder) whichever. well i put more in there and drove to my brothers house and he knew what to do.. so we correctly bled the lines and on my way home it got worse and worse to where i couldnt even make it up the hill to my house. now its like i'm just rolling everywhere.

mine is not a gsx but i think something may have came out from under the car while i was driving LOL it sounded like a ran over a bunch of metal. how much did it cost for you to repair yours?
60$ for an axel... most ppl that oun dsm's do all there oun work..its the nature of the beast with these cars.. i would get the car on jack stands and shake it down good. spinn the wheels and listen to the tranny area..check the the axles..i cant realy put a price on repairs.. you have to find out what is the problem first...then go from there...lets put it this way. worst case senario..1,800 bucks..thats for a stage 1 shep trans a ,good clutch, new oem clutch fork and slave cylinder and fluids.. if you do the work yourself...

and a word of advise..don't short cut on these cars with cheap parts or it will bite ya in the ass.

Do tranny yourself. I did it the first time and it was fairly easy. 900 bucks is over kill and over charge. Mostly because it's labor intensive. Just making sure it's not the clip that goes around the axle that goes into the transmission.
That seems like the symptoms of that problem which I had happen to me once.

I think if it was your clutch you would have atleast some movement. I did have a clutch problem slipping so bad that it was almost to the metal of the clutch disk, all that organic stuff was gone, but I WAS getting some movement and still driving to work.
Have you taken out your axle to verify that the o clip/ or non abs clip was still around the axle spline???

edit: just re read that!vvvvvv ^^^ but something for you to recheck.

ok so i took it to my local mechanic and he said clutch needs replaced. the estimate came out to $910 just for another clutch that is nothing special. why is it so much?

FFFFFffuuu! Do it yourself, that's just insane, especially for a FWD.

Also, get a haircut!

You're clutch is likely toast BUT you should climb under the car and have some depress and release the clutch while you watch the clutch release fork for proper movement.

ok guys.. i got another estimate from a different mechanic and he said $600. i cant do the work myself. i dont have a shop or anything. he said the reason its that expensive is because the clutch comes with a flywheel. where can i find a good but rather cheap clutch kit on the internet? maybe it'll be cheaper if i get my own parts

diagnose the slave cylinder first... ive seen the same thing happen to new owners... especially after a hard run.... sounds like you need to man up and look at your car! or you can pay someone to do it for you, but that just empties the same pockets that you can use to pay for cool parts...

if his clutch was toast he wouldnt be able to put it in gear with the car running and if he did get it in gear it would stall out your syncro rings in your tranny are gone or the shift forks or an axle has poped out or your whole transaxle is gone

im raising up the car tomorrow and i will find out what the problem is. hopefully it's not the clutch because i dont have support for the engine but i guess i can use a jack stand. i'm going to check out everything you guys said and i'll post the problem tomorrow. whoever is right gets a free pat on the back and can paypal me the money to fix it (; oh and i found out something new today. i can put the car in whatever gear i want without having to press in the clutch

Ok, it moves forward in 1st, and backwards in reverse, so it's not a linkage/engagement problem. The cv axle slightly out should make noise.....but may not. Either way, he said it got worse and worse. The cv axle out would be a yes/no type problem, not progressive. Seems you started with a slipping clutch when you got the car (in 4th and 5th) and it's just got worse. You may have a control issue (slave/master cylinder, fork, pivot ball, throwout bearing) causing the problem, but your clutch is surely shot by now. R&R at a shop should run $400-$500, then $50ish to machine the flywheel, then $200ish for the new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing. Not a bad idea to replace the master/slave cylinders while you're at it. Been a long time since I did mine, but I believe you can still get both for under $100.

Oh, for that engine support, a board across the engine bay with a rachet strap around the engine will work. If you do it that way, use good wood, not something laying behind the barn. It's a good idea to use two separate boards, and two separate rachet straps. If you can, prop something under the engine as well. Cut the boards to fit on top of that lip inside of the fender (where it bolts to the car) so it doesn't damage your fender.

Different car, but i did change one once by putting a floor jack under the engine, lowering it till the tranny could clear the fender, slid the tranny off, then raised the engine with the jack high enough to pull the clutch off with the tranny sitting on the ground right under it. That car had a smaller clutch, but you may still be able to do it that way.

if one of the axles hasnt popped out then if he can put it in gear without the clutch in then either the shift forks are gone or every syncro ring in the transmission is gone, i.e. new transmission or have it rebuilt and put a new clutch in anyways.

ok we lifted it today and it looked like i had ran over a cat. there was fiberglass all under the transmission. also found a hole in the bell housing area. isn't that nice. we started to make our way towards the transmission today and boy is it a pain in the ASS. we've had to remove basically the entire driver side of the engine bay. we're not sure of how we're going to support the engine yet (we may try that wood idea) but we're planning on raising the car above our heads to swap out the clutch so no ground support for it.

Your clutch is most likely looks like this

Replace it, bleed your clutch system with flash DOT 3 or DOT 4 while you are at it.

Don't quote me on this, but if it's a kit it should come with a new clutch disc, a new pressure plate, and a installation tool. I would also look into a new pilot bushing and new throw out bearing if they don't come with the kit.
