Clutch engagement point changes overnight?

Hey guys,

So I had to replace my starter on my Talon, before this my clutch engaged fine, it sat over night till I was able to replace it the next night, upon starting the car, my clutch now engages almost all the way up top. And what is really throwing me for a loop is the clutch smoothness seems fine till about an inch off the floor, but when i get to that point, I have to push down HARD, It wont start unless i have it jammed to the floor, after that I can change gears with it not to the floor.

I have been reading and looks like I should change the engagement point with the adjuster rod, but what I havent seen is anyone that has the same problem about it being incredibly stiff about an inch off the floor. Any suggestions??
 
You may be reaching the max travel of the pressure plate and fighting to go beyond that with that last bit of travel. That would be a bad thing. Adjust your pedal travel down with the adjustment rod before you damage your pressure plate, clutch disc, maybe your throw-out bearing, maybe even your master/slave. Adjust the travel so the clutch fully disengages about 2-2.5 inches off the floor while making sure the upper stop isn't putting pressure on the master cylinder with the pedal up.

Also, it's weird that it changed on you just from sitting and from a starter change. The starter change shouldn't have anything to do with it. Maybe you should try bleeding the system once you get it adjusted- you might have air bubbles in the system or something if it's really that variable. I really can't pin anything down for why it might have changed like that.
 
I disconnected the clutch safety switch so I don't have to jam the clutch down to start the car for the time being, as thats the only time when I have to push down that much.

So from what Ive been reading, I would want to turn the adjustment rod counter-clockwise, correct? I tried loosening the locking nut, and damn that thing is hard to get loose. I stoped because i didn't want to strip it, what the hell size but is that? 1/2 inch seems to be a tad to big. :confused:
 
It's a 12mm, IIRC. Not many imperial sizes on these cars. It is usually pretty tight. I can't give a direction, but you're going to be screwing it into the clevis bracket, pulling the rod farther out from the master cylinder. Probably will need a set of pliers to twist it if the lock nut is giving you that much trouble. A little bit goes a long way but you have a long way to go, so you'll probably need at least two or three turns. Just keep changing it and testing it until you get it where you want it.
 
Just for reference:

1. loosen the nut
2. turn the rod clockwise to raise the engagment point
3. turn the rod counter-clockwise to lower the engagement point

HINT: if you can't turn the rod with your fingers, apply pressure to the pedal, wiggle it a bit if you have to and the rod should turn freely. No pliers required.

Depends on what direction you are looking at it from. Is this from the driver seat or laying upside down in the floorboard looking at it from the back(or bottom shall I say). Anyone that has ever adjusted them knows where Im coming from.;)
