1990 tsi, has not run in 10 years, changed out fluids and fuel tank with new pump, got it running ( blew out 10lb of mouse nest from exhaust when it started ) and it smokes like crazy, and no power at all, only get it to drive in 2nd from lack of power. Was told the turbo was shot when I got the car ( reason it was parked years ago) Smoke is defiantly oil. I have a parts car I can swap a turbo from. What should I do first?

check for shaft play in turbo, the seals could be toast, do a compression test.

I would start with a compresion test, been sitting for years rings could be passing or valves could be leaking. It will give you a better idea of what's going

In what way would those things cause smoke?

I would not trust the timing belt for long, after sitting for ten years it could suffer from dry rot and be ready to snap.

Its going to act up for a bit.

If you have blue smoke, then oil is correct... bad turbo, sezied rings, bad stem seals.

Like stated above, check the turbo for shaft play.

If the rings have sized from sitting, new oil and running the engine up to op temp, then loading the rings like you would on a new/rebuilt engine may free them up and seat again.

A leak down test will help confirm if the rings are sized or not.

But with a car that has been parked that long, keep an eye out on all the rubber, belts, hoses, seals.

Sebba... changing the fuel filter is a smart idea, from years of sitting water in the filter could have caused rust on the inside, allowing the rust flakes to clogg the fuel injectors.

It may not cause smoke, but can and will cause other issues.

cheak everything stated all ready fix it, if you r still having smoke problems then it might need new valve seals. sitting for 10years i would rebuild the head and new piston rings. but cheak the easy stuff first then go from there.

What I have done is, fuel tank swap, fuel filter, fuel pump, oil change, fogged cylinders, spark plugs, wires, coolant flush, and I just did the comp test on Friday, 145 on all 4. Still waiting on the turbo rebuild kit.
