Can you hack the cat off?

CEL came on while I was test driving it the night that I bought it (getting the code checked Monday), and I was curious: if it ends up being a clogged cat, can I just cut it off and run a straight pipe or will it negatively affect performance?

Removing a cat will not decrease performace actually increase performance, and if you remove your cat and put a staight pipe in there the engine will throw off an CEL light.

Yes he's absolutely right. There's no way removing a cat will decrease your performance LOL. I removed my cat and it increased my performance significantly, and considering that this can be done for free, it's well worth the time for the performance increase that you will get out of your car.

Just put on a straight pipe like the guys at the track do. There's a reason why they run no cat. Less restriction man.

Just remember that without a cat you won't pass your state inspection if your state requires emissions testing.

On the positive side: it removes a restriction in the exhaust, freeing up horsepower.

On the negative side: it is illegal, pollutes the air, you could fail your state inspection, and it will make your exhaust louder (some may see this as a positive)

Hope this helps!

I'd never turn down cheap and easy HP LOL

luckily our county is exempt from emissions testing, and safety inspections consist of lights, signals, horn, and a visual check of your brake pads :hellyeah:

pollutes the air
expanding my carbon footprint, al gore can suck it :thumb:

and it will make your exhaust louder (some may see this as a positive)
I wonder how much. A little bit I can handle, but if it's going to sound like most of the aftermarkets out there, no thanks.

just pull out ## gauge cluster and remove the bulb for the light and u wont have to worry about it, haha

That will work great until you actually do have a problem and your CEL tries to tell, but you removed the dummy light and the problem just goes from bad to worse. I'm not saying it hasn't been done, but there are much better ways to solve this than removing the CEL bulb. :notgood:

Ive hear welding a tube about 1 1/4" long with threads on top for the o2 sensor and that it will read the exhaust but since its not in the direct path, its gettin more oxygen too and only have the exhaust and it wont throw the cel?

or u can also get Spark Plug Non Fouler Available at your local automotive store. Spark Plug Non Fouler PN 42009 (18mm) ($4.99)

well this is what i did:
1. You now need to drill out 1 of the non foulers using a 1/2" drill bit.
2. then install o2 Sensor in the modified non fouler (the one you drilled out)
3. install the Second, unmodified non fouler on modified non fouler

so its should be.... pipe>Original non fouler->Modified non fouler->o2 sensor

so by moving the secondary o2 sensor away from the direct path of exhaust flow and limiting what exhaust gas can get to the o2 sensor the ecu believes that there is a functioning cat still in the system.
im almost at 200 miles an still no light :sneaky:

very interesting 2g, for me that sounds like it may be easier than fabbing a simulator

2g DSMer I did not follow anything you typed. I'm sure if I didn't wake up 10 mins ago, I would be able to comprehend what your trying to say. But ... :hmm:

I bought an ebay cat-back & downpipe that deletes the cat. I haven't thrown a CEL in 4 months.
