Hey i was wondering, will a clogged fuel filter cause problem in starting up your car?I dont know if my filter has ever been changed and im getting bad gas millage right now. So thats why im wondering. When i try to start my car in the morn it takes a good 12 turns before it starts. I have to pump the gas too. 1995 Talon Tsi. Thanks guys

How many miles are on you're car?
A Bad Fuel Filter can cause that problem.
You should not need to pump your pedal.
Hence EFI, not Carbureted.

Pumping the pedal on an injected car doesn't do anything.

If you have about two million miles on your car and regularly fill your tank during sub-Saharan sandstorms, that coffee-can of a gas filter might be plugged.

How old are those plugs? What kind of shape is your air filter in? How's your ISC? Is your BIS screw gone?

What's been done to the car that you didn't think you needed to mention to us?

Defiant, I take it by your statement that these fuel filters rarely get clogged? So should I not worry about replacing it or what? What would be a good sign/s that I need to change it out since it's such a PITA? thanx

I'm the 2nd owner and I changed my fuel filter around 103000 mi and I couldn't blow thru that filter and I will say let a mechanic do it because its a real pain in the butt! if you do it yourself be sure to remove and go to the auto parts place with it because that gst engine calls for 2 different filters ( metric or SAE) and will leak if the right one is not installed!

Its not rare for them to get clogged. Think of their function.. "Fuel --Filter--"
There job is to filter the fuel and stop anything from passing to the injectors/motor.
There are "some" gas stations that have really nasty fuel cells, where the gas is stored under ground. Heres a tip for you.. Never fill up you're gas tank when there is a gas tanker truck filling up the gas station. The truck filling up the tanks, stirs all the dirt/grime around, and where does it go? Up the lines into your gas tank.

According to the owners manual of a DSM, you should change the fuel filter every 30,000-50,000 miles. It is your choice to do so or not.

It really is not that much of a PITA to change. Its easy to get to once removing the battery/tray. The hard part is, sometimes the banjo bolts are stubbern to get out.
The best way I have found is, using a extended open mouth vise grip, and clamping onto the filter itself, so it cannot twist.. And then try to get the bolts out.

I second this. I changed mine last week and it was a huge pain in the a55. But it really did need it because now I can tell an improvement with the way the car starts ard runs. Be prepared to learn the value of patience. When finished you will have busted up knuckles and a vocabulary that contain 10 new cuss words. :dsm:

I tried to install my fuel filter a couple weeks ago and failed miserably. I do know the 10 new cuss words you are talking about. I will be taking it to a mechanic to get this maintenance item done!

Does anyone have any guides to this? I just bought a Talon that has 110k miles on it. Starting to collect general parts to restore it (or make it not break). Starting up is a little rough. I have sparkplugs sitting in my room, wires on the way, and plans to buy a new filter tomorrow. Which fuel filter would one recommend? Hard to install? Any advice/guides? Brand? Thanks.
