I just got done rebuilding my bottom end and when I got to putting my head together,I noticed a chip missing off my intake cam gear.I cant find any oem cam gears for cheap at all.I know this is a stupid question, but can I still use it.It has a little chip but I understand that it could cause balance issues and maybe end up destroying my engine. But take a look of the pic.If it wont work, then can anyone point me in a direction to get a replacement for cheap? Maybe someone here has what im looking for.

I would'nt use it, I would think that the sharp edge of the chip would cause small cuts or abrasions in the timing belt causing it to eventually snap so you will have to rebuild the top of your motor to match the rebuild bottem end.

I wouldn't use it. It could cause balance issues like you said and it could also eat into the timing belt or cause the belt to jump teeth. Either way I think you should get a new one or risk bent valves.

I wouldn't use it, but if you have to say, drive it to the gunk yard to look for a used one. Maybe file down the ruff spots in the chip at lest. Just a thought.

Or JP weld it using an old timing belt as a mold. Again just a thought.?.

Good luck...

jb weld? would that even work.sounds like a good idea

i filled in the crack with some jb weld and amazingly, it holds up and is very strong.i will be finished repairing the cam gear this by tomorrow since it takes 12hours for the jb weld to cure.someone should really make a tech article ob jb weld.

tronno, I would advise against using the JB welded cam gear because at the speed at which the gear spins the jb weld is likely to fall out. If you are running with the timing covers on it could cause a catastrophic failure including a snapped timing belt, destroyed head, and possibly the loss of the entire motor. I pm'ed you the other day because I have a spare set and I don't want much for them. I really would not trust an unbalanced, rigged piece on such a crucial part of your motor. Not trying to make this a "Buy my parts" thread but it would be terrible to have you blow a motor for something so stupid.

I would feel horrible if this recked your engine because I was throwing ideas around. I really have no experience with JP weld, the thought just came to me as I was running ideas through my head trying to help you. I was implying that the weld only be used for a short tip, maybe to the junk yard or work for a day or two.

If you've already done it or still want to; I hope you really look into it well so you know what your getting into. Like I said before, I'd feel really bad if my idea gets you into a worse spot than you started. A broken engine would be a worse spot for sure.

I was happy you thought it a good idea, but after reading that last post I was a little worried I didn't think it through enough.
