I am dropping in a built engine so I took the old one out and decided to pull the pan and this is what I found. There was more junk stuck to the pickup screen also. The engine ran fine and I have yet to find out where all this came from but thats a considerable amount of metal there.

Hehe. Nah thats not a washer. Among the metal shavings there were also numerous brown peices of rubber-like particles. Not sure where those came from either. :sosad: Thats one of the bigger ones I guess.

That brown rubber stuff is RTV from the pan. Were the bearing clearances checked on this motor or was it stock. What bearings were used?? What was your oil pressure at high rpm?

Clevitte bearings. It was assembled by a shop back in 03. Going off the stock oil pressure guage it was at the 2nd to highest mark on the guage while cruisin down the highway. Never went below half even at idle.

Yea that bearing material is way out of line for some one who built it for you. There should be none period. Why are you replacing the engine?? Was it noisy or what?

Looks like the engine that pan came off was running on borrowed time.

Good luck on the new engine.

Yeah it was assembled by a local shop where I used to live. Looks like they did a shabby job.

The engine ran fine. I was very suprised to see shavings like that in the pan. It didnt make any abnormal noises or anything. The only reason I am taking it out is because I had a new engine built that I am dropping in.

Balance shafts were eliminated when it was assembled back in 03.

I had shavings like that in my oil pan when I replaced it.

Turns out my front balance shaft bearings had a few craters on them, and a few light spider cracks around the races.

And here's what my crank bearings looked like:
