Hey guys Just wanted someone to look over my timing belt timing and make sure all is good. I can still insert the pin into the hydrolic tensioner thats how tight it is, also the crank is lined up on the plate. The picture kinda distorts it and you can't see it clear, but it is lined up on the mark. So hows it look?

The timing marks seem to line up correctly, but how did you check the oil pump/ rear balance shaft sprocket for proper orientation? You know it's timed correctly only once out of every three rotations, right?

The belt tension is too tight. The rod should protrude 0.15 to 0.18 inch, or 3.81 to 4.57mm when measured from the top of the tensioner body to the bottom of the tensioner arm. An easy way to measure this is to try to insert the shaft of various size drill bits into the gap and see which size fits. 1/8" bit =3.2mm, 5/32" =3.95mm, 11/64" =4.35mm. Don't force the bits into the gap or you could get bad readings.

Balance shafts are eliminated so it doesnt matter where the oil pump lines up,as long as its on the marks, correct?

Correct, after you eliminate the B-Shafts, all you have to do is align the oil pump gears inside the oil pump, then once your crank and your cams are aligned, your oil pump should be rotated to the mark as you have it shown.

Actually, once you do away with the balance shafts, it doesn't matter how the oil pump gears line up. At that point, it is only the crank and cams that matter. After getting rid of mine, I couldn't believe how quick you could set it.

To the original poster, if you can still insert the pin into your tensioner, you are too tight. You are real close though. For mine, I use a small drill bit to hold the thing compressed while I'm getting everything set. Once it is set, I pull the pin and make sure it won't go back in. I make sure it moves at least a pin diameter to make sure I'm not too tight. Since you're taking pictures, take a few minutes to do it right. The consequences of getting it wrong are too costly.

If you are concerned at all about the cam gears, take a straight edge (piece of paper works) and run it along the center line of hte cam gear bolts. The marks should be right on the edge. If not, you are off.

^^^ agreed.... do your 6-bolts have crank angle sensors like the 2g's?
the reason I'm asking is because in his pic of the crank sprocket, I don't see the crank angle sensor where it should be on my 7-bolt set-up?

6 bolts use just a cam angle sensor. Also allows for more timing advance from what I hear.

Yes this does look like a 6bolt. My 7bolt (2g 95 GST) has a cam angle sensor (I'm guessing thats what kind of sensor it is) right beside the crank sprocket, instead of on the side of the valve cover like on a 6bolt.

I have a question (sorry if I'm hijacking this thread).
I'm trying to figure out how to put my new timing belt on my car. I've removed my balance shaft too and I have the marks inside my oil filter set and front cover reinstalled w/ new gaskets and all that. I'm using a new tensioner too. Is there any other VFaq's that thuroughly explain how to install a timing belt besides the 2g timing belt install on vfaq.com?

Also how can I check to make sure I did not move my crank while removing the crank sprocket before(or after?) putting my new timing belt on?

Actually the 95-96 dsms came with a cam sensor located behind the intake cam gear as well as a crank sensor which is the one by the crank sprocket.

As for reinstalling your timing belt, put the crank at top dead center. Then rotate it a little bit so that NO piston is at the top. Turn over the cams until they line up and then you can rotate the crank back to TDC. Put your belt on and using a screw driver or something, apply pressure to the tensioner pulley. Then you pull your pin out of the auto tensioner and let the belt get nice and tight. Wait a few minutes and turn the crank over by hand. 6 rotations of the crank should be sufficient to see if everything is timed right. Good luck.
