Check timing

I was reading this thread I always checked the timing by cranking the engine over by hand is this bad practice? How else do you check timing besides timing light the markings and

measure the lift, duration and degree to their specs

?

You can check timing with a timing light and pointing it at the cam gears. If you have a timing light that you can adjust and put in 5* on it the timing marks will be lined right up when at 5* base timing.
