I recently got a check engine light on my car so i bought a datalogger and it is code 42 which is a problem with the fuel pump. i looked it up in the haynes manual and it said it was a problem with the harness and connector and also the MFI relay. i have a walbro 190 fuel pump not rewired. im not sure what the harness and connector is or what the MFI relay is. i am also going to rewire the fuel pump very soon. if anyone has any ideas about what i should do to clear it that would help me out a lot.
thanks

I am getting the same code right now. It doesnt affect anything when it comes on for me . I am going to get another Fuel pump relay am put it in, if that solves the problem i'll let you know.

The code doesn't seem like its affecting anythign for me either, its just a little hard to start my car sometimes. thanks for replying

This light STILL wont go away even after putting the stock fuel pump back in and resetting the ECU. Any other ideas????

Try rewiring the fuel pump at the battery. Most of the time this code is from a bad ground or not enough voltage making its way back to the pump.

thank u ... i'll check that out right away

Yeah I'd recommend doing the rewire anyway (shown here and here), it will provide more voltage to your pump, which makes it flow more. But for now I'd check the voltage back there, check grounds, etc. Good luck!

Missing from some of the factory service manuals is that there is a sense wire from the fuel pump power lead on the MPI relay to ECU pin 13. The only place I found reference to it was in the 1G tech manual on 14-26 under fuel pump drive signal and that if the ECU doesn't see power on pin 13 during cranking or during driving it will throw a code 42. You note that the VFAQ does show it on the ECU pinouts.

I checked the fuel control relay(the one under the radio on the passenger side of the car) and it checked out all good. I'm still wondering what could possibly be triggering this cel. also, if anyone knows of a more complete wiring diagram than the one in the hayne's manual please tell me where i can take a look at it.

If your pump is working, you checked that pin 13 is at 12v when the pump is on, and you get the CEL, it's time to check your ECU for the capacitors leaking. I've fixed a couple that did this.

http://www.taboospeedshop.com/wiring.htm It's not perfect but it's nice to have everything on one page.

Yeah, i checked pin 13 and it's getting over 13v when the pump is on, i also checked all the ground ecu pins and those all checked out good. i will check my capacitors right now. thanks again for your help
