Hello! I bought a wonderful 1gb AWD DSM last year and I have had a blast pouring my time and money into making it a reliable drive, the one thing keeping from DSM nirvana is a troublesome CEL 42 code that I have been unable to figure out.
I replaced the fuel pump when I bought the car and nothing changed, and it slowly developed a long crank in order to get running. I recently noticed that the blue fuel check valve on the return was BACKWARDSS!!!!! Probably was me who messed that up but I am not sure...
Either way I flipped it seemed to leave a long crank however, and I was still left wondering why. I eventually replaced It with a 2-way valve joining the two lengths of hose, and voila my long crank was gone!
I am now wondering if that back-pressure on the return line could have been damaging my pump to cause the CEL?
This is my first car and I'd love to tie a bow on all the work I've done on the car. What do y'all think?

FYI Voltages on the connectors are good and I've replaced the FPR, filter, and pump.

From @steve's post
"Fault code 42 is thrown when the ECU pulls the pin for the fuel pump side of the MPI relay low (56?) and doesn't see 12v on pin 13 indicating that the pump is getting power."

More likely your problem was related to a harness connectivity issue.

What is this check valve in the return that you speak of? The return lines are not valved, they don't need to be. Fuel cannot possibly travel backwards in the system.
are you talking about the evap system check valve? If that's the case, no, you're not going to get a 42 from that guy being backwards.

On the fuel return line, the blue thingy is what I am talking about

Ah, you're likely referring to the overfill limiter (#15). The return hose doesn't come anywhere near the pump assembly.

Not related to a code 42. I'd closely inspect your connection at the sending unit -- you might have a wiring issue that will strike only after driving for a little while and get you stranded on the highway.
