So you picked a handling tech forum? WTF

Make a heat shield for the headers with sheet metal.
Buy a heat shield (or make one) for the turbo, like Slowboy's fabric one.
Wrap your downpipe.

Sir, his car handles very, very well. I've been in it at 150+ MPH around tight turns as he ate some fast ass Porsches for dinner.

Yes, but then that partially offsets the weight savings offered by the hood. Not cool dude. :notgood:

Ok... now this already odd thread calls for two "WTF faces"... so here they are

WTF WTF

Just because his car handles well doesn't mean this post belongs in a Handling Tech forum - it belongs in the Appearance/Interior/Exterior part of the Newbie forum.

The insignificant weight of a sheet metal heat shield and some fabric heat wrap doesn't matter. He can either have one or the other; a protected, light-weight carbon fiber hood, or an unprotected hood with burns through it.

The clear coat will start to lift soon if you don't protect it.

Amen to that. PLEASE opt for the shield. Carbon fiber looks horrendous when it has heat damage.

Velo, Ive been thinking about that exhaust wrap. I dont know if I'd reccommend it, but I could be wrong. Reason is, when you use heat wrap, it traps moisture over time between the metals and fiber. When it heats up, and sits over time on the bare metal, it creates rust, or rot at worst. It would be like leaving a damp cloth on bare metal all the time. See what im saying?

Eh... good thought, but engines aren't very moist places; especially near the warm exhaust components. Unless you keep your car garaged for three years at a time, any moisture that gets caught in the exhaust wrap will evaporate as soon as those hot gases from your engine start flowing.

Also, heat wrap isn't very hydrophyllic either. It tends to repel water more than absorb it.

Personally, I don't really like what it does for the engine bay appearance-wise. But shhh... saying that would be rice. ;)

In any case, I like the reflective cloth heat shield Slowboy sells, I'd look into something like that.

That Slowboy insulation looks very very nice. I would also recommend the products offered by DEI performance. Their site offers all types of heat insulation from wire loom to antifreeze. Pretty slick stuff..

You saved probably 25-30lbs with that hood, a 2lb heat shield makes little offset. Protect that hood!!

Thread moved. Lets keep it on topic now.....

I dont have a DNP header, but I have ran my cast manifold w/o the heat shield, and with my external WG about a 1/2" from the underside of the hood. And I'm also running a VIS carbon fiber hood and I've never had a single problem with the hood reacting to the heat.

hey guys thanks alot ..i gonna run it without any thing and keep checkin it ..i just hope i don't mess up the clear coat on the outside of the hood ..but if 99gstracer has the same hood and his is fine i'll try it ...how long have u mean running like that ? also i'm in ny so its pretty damn cold here i bet in the southern states like florida might not be good

I actually have 2 of these hoods. Both are painted red and clear coated. I have one in my bedroom right now, and I'm looking at the underside. The clearcoat is flawless above where the exhaust manifold is, and I've ran without a heat shield for a total of about 12 months.......

I didn't have your luck with my DNP. I lost my AC fan over the summer. It melted one of the fins, permanently deforming it. My DNP would glow with only moderate boosting. Protect your hood and buy/make your self a heat sheild. BTW, Its not fun trying to wrap one of those things. The runners are very close and the job will not look clean. I wrapped my DNP, it helped a bit (my fan stop melting), but it looks like sh.. On the other hand, my hood is ok, but then again its not a CF hood.

Hey,
I run VIS racing Invader style hood. there is big ventilating aperture above manis.
Now I will build my own custom tubular manis..hope will be okay..BTW wanna run with thermal friction tape.
Hope this FIX:thumb:

Marsa's got the right idea. I don't remember if RRE sells it, but someone sells a carbon-fiber extractor vent that looks pretty good. Scot Gray's USCC 1G had it.

I'd matchpaint the whole thing, but that's just me. :D

I've been running my dnp manifold with no wrap or heatshield for 20k miles, and it hasn't done anything to my carbonfiber hood. I wouldn't worry about it.

You can get the vents at www.carbontrix.com

I have one above my DNP manifold on a stock hood and it starting to turn brown from heat after ~ 5,000 miles.

You can put spacers on the hood which lifts the rear of it. It lets the heat out. True story. I know several people doing this.

I have the same VIS Invader style carbon fiber hood on my 2g TSI with basically a stock motor and I believe I have had some heat damage.......it appears like there are small dents all over the thing. Can you use the factory heat shield for under the hood on a VIS carbon fiber hood? Will it stick under the hood?.......or will it even help?

Ya, I figured it would help. I just didnt know if there was something missing from under the hood(that the stock hood has and VIS doesnt) that helped hold it in place......but I can always fab something. Thanks paul......hey, are you going to ITB this coming year?

I ran stock engine/manis ..with my VIS Invader and everything okay...
Can you send me please Detailed:) pics of your hood? ..mean that "venting hole" second layer manufacturing label..and others on my email: [email protected]
wanna be sure about my hood...

Thank you a lot:thumb:

I dont have any direct pics of my hood.......this hood was on my old TSI, sitting next to my parents house. I can get pics of the hood and what-not. I plan on taking some more pictures of my old TSI and my new GSX anyways.
