Ah yes, California smog laws.... She had to have been asked about a CARB # for a part on the car that was suspected of being "not factory". This could be an intake, an exhaust piece, etc that she has installed. A CARB # is obtained by the manufacturer of the part. Chances are good that the manufacturer who made the part didn't have a CARB # issued for that part - there are few manufacturers who register their parts to get CARB numbers issued due to expense. AEM is one of the few. Any part that does not have a CARB # issued for it (almost all parts for our cars) is not considered smog "legal" - even if it doesn't keep your car from passing smog. They'll ask you to remove it or they won't pass you.

Gotta love CA with the ridiculous CARB crap.

yes isn't this place grand? Allow me to make this suggestion for your carb #. While few parts for our cars are tested and issued the #'s as Chris stated there are a few that are. I would reccommend searching through the carb approved lists until you find a similar item that is approved for your car. IE: If you have a SBR uicp on your car, but it isn't on the list and a dejon tool uicp is approvedt, tell the guy it's the approved one. This has worked for me before, depending on the shop your milage will vary but I'll tell you it beats the hell out of tearing the car apart every 2 years to put the stock parts back on for a day.

that's exacltly what i told her to put the stock air filter box back in there, even though it passes the tech is going to look at it and bi*** about it.

anyways i appreciate you help guys i owe you one.

any of you out here in the bay area i have a window tinting shop in redwood city, if you need info or help or get your car done i'll hook u up with a good price. take care...... :thumb:

It's just another tax. I'm amazed the State can get away with it, what with all their non-discrimination rules. There are many items that are so generic -such as the fine Taiwanese copy of a Dejon intake pipe- and have NO effect on emissions, but are still required to get a number. And isn't the Dejon the one that has an Eclipse number, but none for the Talon?

There's no business like government business.
