CARB question for CA

I was looking at all the threads about CARB but I can't find what I am looking for. I want to get a aftermarket intake like injen, dejon, etc. But i'm still wondering which ones are CARB exempt and if they aren't how can I "pretend" it is CARB exempt. Now with the injen, they say if you use the stock bov then it is CARB exempt, but if you use an aftermarket bov then its pending. So does that mean an aftermarket bov has to be CARB exempt too? And what about the ebay intakes? I mean how can a pipe make that much of a difference? If you guys know anything about this please let me know cause I am really confused on the whole thing now. And would powdercoating the pipe black make a difference in the sense of making it look stock?

It all depends on who you get it smogged with. If things are blinged out in the engine bay then obviously they'll be more aware that the car is modified. If you keep it looking stealthy, they might not notice.

Pretty much any engine mod you do has to be CARB certified to be legal, if it isn't then it's illegal.

When doing smog go to someone you know that wont care about the visual. As long as your car passes through the sniffer you should be good. Stock looking is always better. DAMN CALI with the smog!!

Anything on the motor has to have a CARB approval sticker. It's extortion. The State still needs money, and it can only make so much off underpaying its CHP dispatchers.
Here's the fun part: the CARB-approved Injen will fail visual on a Talon, because they didn't pay the bribe... er, certification fees to get it a sticker on the Eagle. Same everything, but no stickee, no certee.
As for pretending, anyone bright enough to know which end of the car to stick the sniffer into will know it's just a piece of tubing. Unfortunately, they also know that the fine for "overlooking" is on the order of $30K, along with the nuisance of finding another field to make a living in. They are also aware that the State uses decoys, and that if they just "trust" someone to be okay, they might wind up on a train to the work camps. If you find a mechanic who'll save you the bother of swapping snorkels, treat him like gold and never divulge who nor where.
In the Injen example, "pending" means "We Don't Have It Yet And You Will Fail Visual".
A BOV is regarded by the CARB as being "part of the intake", and as such must be approved. I don't know if any of them are. On the other side, not that many mechanics know what a BOV is in the first place, and the ones who can recognize a stock DSM piece are all the more rare. However, their magpie-like vision can and does recognize anything shiny, new, pretty or purple, and they know it's wrong without knowing why.
And of course, anyone under 30 with a sharp-looking car will automatically be suspect.
