car stalling

Ok, I have a 1g AWD TSI. I drive to work and the car runs fine but when I get back in the car after about 1hr and start it up and drive off I don't even get about 1 mile and the car dies and the ECU starts making a clicking noise and the check engine light turns on. After a few hrs I start it back up and drive off it runs great the check engine light doesn't turn on but when I turn the key off the ECU still makes the clicking noise! what could be wrong? any info will help

Sounds like it could either be the caps in your ecu are going bad or your fuel pump relay is going bad. Their is a diy on vfaq.com for the ecu caps.

When the ECU or the caps go bad, you can smell it on some occasions. It actually smells like rotten eggs if it's really going bad. But it sounds more like your fuel pump relay that's going bad in this situation.

I'm getting plenty of fuel and why does the car act fine after a day or so?

Pull the ECU out, take the cover out, and inspect it for the leaky caps. If you don't know what to look for, do a search here, or on the VFAQ. If it is the caps and you let the problem persist, it will do more damage to the board.

Dave Mertz @ DSMlink.com is my #1 guy for ECU repair. You should email him if you find your ECU is leaking. He will also socket the ECU for you.

also it takes about 15-20 min to start when its cold. sometimes when it starts the will start clicking like rev click rev click and then it stalls. then I restart the car and it runs fine. does this sound like the ecu or the fuel pump relay. sorry for all the questions, i'm new with the dsm life
