OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

When you shut down, the engine has no flow of coolant. It builds up excess heat and thus pressure in the cooling system. It relieves by venting to the overflow. When the engine cools down, it has a vacuum which allows it to pull coolant back from the overflow. Thus purging any air from the system.

That in of itself it not a problem. If you have fluctuation of temp, likely it could be a sticking thermostat. New or not, they can go bad.

Let us know.

Defintely look for an air bubble. That is what I had and now it does not overheat at all!! Pull the radiator cap off (when the car isn't hot) and then fire it up. A big gash of coolant will pop up if there is an air bubble inside somewhere. Turn the car off and then let it sit until the gargling stops... then refill. :D

Thank you guys all for your help and support. I put a new thermostat in the car and re-torqued the head and put coolant in the over flow and everything seems to be ok i will drive it and keep you guys posted

My car used to overheat all the time.. Constantly. But I replaced the Theramstat and the cap and it doesnt anymore... Except when I have been driving for quite a while. At least 30 minutes. But the temp gauge stays dead center... Until I stop. Then it jumps over to hot. But as soon as I start to move again it starts cooling down. It never completely goes all the way to hot. Just to that line just before the H. Sometimes it goes over though. But, the cars still runs fine. I dont smell coolant. Coolant is not leaking or boiling. Any ideas?

The reason why the temp needle is on the center while driving is exactly that...You're driving and air cools the car down but the moment you stop it overheats. My cousin had the same problem and he had a blown head gasket.
You say the coolant is not leaking so that means you aren't losing coolant? Have you check your coolant and is your coolant reservoir mid full?
Here is a link that is helpful

If you constantly refill your coolant after every 20miles or so then you might have a blown head gasket. Good luck

I would look at your fan switch. It would appear that your cooling fans are not coming on. Quick test. If you have it, turn your ac on. Observe the fans. When the compressor kicks in, your electric fans should come on. If they come on, it could be the coolant sensor. If they do not come on with the ac, then it likely could be the fans or relay.

Use a test light to confirm if the fans don't come on. If you have voltage and ground and they are inoperative, then it IS the fans.

Good Luck

while your by the radiator, make sure the fins are not cloged with junk, this cause the air not to flow through the fins, therefore not cooling the coolant.

Yes, the radiator can cause overheats. However, the complaint is overheat while sitting still. If you had a stopped up radiator, it would also manifest itself under load or when going up hill, etc.

Sorry I forgot to mention I already replaced the fan switch as well. The fans appear to be working fine. How would I got about flushing my radiator?

Copied from a wiseman. Pretty simple

On 1g's there is a radiator drain plug on the bottom right-hand side of the radiator (you can get to it easily by feeling underneath the driver's side wheel well. It's a little round plastic screw with a long square piece on the end, making it pretty easy to turn by hand, usually.

Just drain all the fluid out, then run clean water from the garden hose through the thermostat housing until the water runs relatively clear out the drain plug. Replace drain plug. Refill. Squeeze hoses to let out trapped air. Replace radiator cap. Good as new.

Be sure to clean it really well/thoroughly. Try some rust inhibitor. Every mitsubishi I've had has had rust issues with the radiator. It doesn't help.

When stopped, put the car in neutral and rev and hold it at 3 - 3.5k, if the needle goes down, you are just low on coolant or you have air in the system. Get a jug of coolant, open your radiator cap, fill it up with the car running, and let it run for about a minute. Tighten it up and go for a ride. That should get all of the air out and any missing coolant filled in.

i just finished up making my car run right w/ my maft(no datalogger yet) and i took it on a trip across town, about 4-5 miles, and when i started to come home my temp guage was about halve way between middle and the last hash mark. whenever i was idling it would rise slowly but when i was going over about 20 it would slowly come back down. anyone have any ideas? are the two wires coming off the thermostat housing for coolant flow or anything? could knock be a cause since i don't have a logger? please any help would be very very much appreciated

you probably know this, it's sorta common sense but just in case you slipped and forgot...

the only reason it's cooling down when you're going over 20 is it's blowing enough cold air into the engine from the passing wind to cool it down.

but anyway...yea i'd def. get that wire problem fixed, even if it's not causing this problem.

I had an overheating problem on my 92 Talon, at idle the temp would rise so I replaced the thermostat, flushed the radiator, even the temp sensor on the thermostat housing. The problem ended up being the thermo fan switch on the lower passanger side of the radiator. This tiny little switch turns on the cooling fans when the engine reaches a certain temp. Funny how one little switch can cause so much aggrivation!LOL

any idea on how to get those wires fixed, i notice when i got home that both wires had broken off of the connector. i'm pretty damn sure this has something to do w/ it because it never overheated till now and now those wires are busted. or does anyone know the exact part name and i can just get a complete new connector for it?

im not sure, but my harness pulled out there also, What i noticed when mine was unplugged, my fans would be on always and the car would have a hard time starting, once i rigged something up it was fine again.

that is your coolant temparure sensor so i would assume that would be your coolant tempature sensor plug they are all the same turbo or not just go to a salvage yard and get one if ya can i know for a fact autozone coolant plugs arnt the same so their plugs wouldnt match either no luck at salvage check online.

Ok this is the last time I'm going to ask. yesterday my radiator busted. Well after replacing it my car now gets hot only when driven, not while idleing. I've burped the radiator and tried everything I can to fix it. when I drive it the temp goes up quickly. Could this be my head gasket, there is no coolant in my oil, and no water out the tailpipe. What could this be. My friend say I might have blown a water jacket in my head gasket. All I know is when I drive it it gets hot and when I park it all you can here is the pressure being released into my overflow bottle. The last time I drove it I pulled into my drive way and had to turn the rad cap to the first click to relieve the pressure. When u do get the cap off all u here is the water boiling in my head. Could I have busted my heads gasket without getting coolant in my oil. I just replaced the water pump becuase the last one the bearing went bad. The car runs fine no misses or anything just gets hot while driving.. Please give me info before I rip the head off of it. This would be the second head gasket in 9 months. First one was because the TB snapped.  :laser:
