OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

At the worst it could be your headgasket leaking at the waterjackets. Its pushing presure into the system and getting hot.

Ok i did the coolant flush and filled the radiator to the top frm the radiator cap. its still overheating. how hard is it to replace the thermostat?

Test or just replace the 2 wire engine coolant temp sensor. This is the one the ECU uses to determine when to turn the fans on. (The 1 wire one is for the dash temp gauge).

OK, I replaced the temp sensor. It's staying much much cooler, but my temperature still does a lot of fluctuating. I'm wondering if I should rewire the fans so they are always on?

I'm not sure what else I can do to keep the car cooled down. Any other suggestions?

If you rewire the fans here's a good way: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/pro...-issue-plus-wiring-them-up.html#post151319397

The other day driving home.(about 50miles) I didn't even hit boost because the cars having some issues. When I got home I popped open the hood and the turbo manifold was glowing? I thought this to be odd just because I wasn't even boosting the car, I could see if I was beating the shit out of it, but that wasn't the case. Any idea why this would be?

Have you checked your ignition timing?

Not anything recent. The car right, but then sat for over a year not moving and now its running again. Just had the car tuned, and then had coolant spray everywhere when I hit the boost cut because I'm having boost creep problems. How would the timing effect this?

Thanks,
Stefan

Because if ignition timing is off it could cause the manifold to glow.

Edit: Wait where did the coolant come from that sprayed all over?

Where did all the coolant spray from?

I'm trying to solve that problem. It was a lot of coolant. I think the radiator cap is getting week, but I don't think it would have cause that much to spray out. I will be doing a compression test this weekend to see if the HG is gone. If so im guessing the head lifted off the block and cause it to spray everywhere:mad:

major boost leak uber lean. use search to build boost leak tester

Just for clarification, a boost leak will cause to you to run rich.;)

Retarded timing will cause EGT's to rise. What is your base timing? Your profile shows you have EMS so it should be easy enough to see what the engine is doing.

Do the compression test and/or look for signs of oil and coolant mixing and go from there.

My Stock cooling fan just became dislogged from the cooling fan motor.. my question is, i just got done replacing the radiator cap thermostat and gasket, because my car was running a little hot, and the temp was rock steady after that.. today i was driving around town( stop and go) and the gauge started creeping up until it finally pegged.. i pulled over and relized my fan motor wasnt on and checked it out to find it was broken.. So what im asking is can just have a fan motor out cause it to totally overheat ?? i didnt think the gauge would peg just cause my fan was out?? thanks guys..

If you don't have any air flow through the radiator (like when you sit stopped) and the fans don't kick on or work, then you'll overheat. You need air flow through the radiator for it to do it's job.

Having a FMIC compounds the problem because it also blocks some of the little airflow you would get as you move between stop lights.

i do have a rather large core... but even wen driving 40 mph the gauge would stop getting hotter but wouldnt go back down to normal.. then id stop, and it would start getting hotter again until it finnally pegged... anyone else with some tips.. ive been looking into buying a new radiator for sometime now and i just ordered the punishment core with 2 fans so im sure that will help, but i would still like to know why its doing that... :thumb:

While you're moving, you're getting enough air flow to cool the amount of heat the engine is putting out. Then you stop, and the coolant gets warmer. When you start moving again, the gauge stops going up because you're getting just enough air flow to remove enough heat offset the heat the engine is transferring to the coolant.

Let's do this metaphorically:

You start with a number... say 0 for ease. While we're moving, I count up, then you say the number under the one I said, I say the number above the one you said. So it would go...
0...1...0...1...0...1...0...
Equilibrium.

Now, when we stop. I keep counting up, and you stop counting down. So,
1...2...3...4...5

We start moving,
4...5...4...5...4...5..4...5

then we stop again.
6...7...8...9...

That's why the engine doesn't cool off. It's fighting a battle it can't win alone. It needs the help of the fan.

Now, the fan is like a helper, a friend of yours riding in the car with us if you will.
While we're moving, you count down and he doesn't. When we stop, he counts down and you don't.

So while moving, you and I'd alternate 0...1...0...1...0
then when we stop, you friend would count down in your place 0...1...0...1...0
and we stay in equilibrium.

Fix the fan, fix your problem. Just get one from a salvage yard for now.

heres a band aid .. turn on the AC this will kick on the secondary fan and help cool it. If you dont want the AC to run unplug the compressor it should still kick the fan on i believe. Either way running the AC will turn on the fan and help cool it if you must drive it

great info guys.. like i said i order an aluminum radiator and 2 12inch fans... so they should be here by mid week.. im only going back and forth to work which is like a mile away for now so the car shouldnt heat up at all.. i had takin my ac fan out already to make clearance for my lower intercooler pipe so i cant use that.. but thanks for the help guys... :thumb:

First off I'd like to mention that I did search and no posts matched my situation. The past few days my car has been overheating. When I'm driving (even when pushing her a little bit) the temp is right where it should be. When I put it in park is when it starts to overheat. I checked my fluids and everything is full and I don't see any coolant lines disconnected or anything. Is it possibly the thermostat going out? Anyone experience this before or have an idea what may be causing this?
