OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

This happened to me with a GM 3800 Series II V6 engine just about a month back. It was the waterpump. I bet that's what's happening with you. It was gradual at first but then got progressively wrose with the overheating. I got the water pump replaced and the heater worked much better and the overheating stopped right then. Keep us posted.

I have noticed my belts been squeeling the last like 2 days and since its started squeeling I'v noticed this problem. Could it be my belt since both the water pump and alternator are run off that belt?

is your oil leval correct, also are you noticing any antifreeze leaking anywhere and is the antifreeze leval correct?

I just changed the oil a couple weeks ago. I havent noticed any antifreeze leaking anywhere. I also just did a thermostat on it a couple weeks ago so I'm pretty sure the coolant is full. I would have the coolant light on if it wasnt full.

My check engine light just came on also, I havent checked it yet. But would a bad coolant temp sensor cause the problems I'm having?

I'm very concerned with engine overheating. I live in Puerto Rico, and as you may know, we have a tropical climate here, which makes it quite hot, even in winter. My main concern is engine overheating. As you may have seen from my other threads, I lost my original engine due to overheating (which was just one of the things that caused it to die, because it had several other problems). Now I'm putting in an N/T Engine to my turbo car setup. I REALLY do not want to have problems with it overheating. There is alot of traffic where I live as well, and traffic jams used to make my Pontiac Grand Prix overheat very quickly.

Are there any ways to avoid overheating? Any suggestions? Of course regular maintainance and radiator flush + new coolant will help... but anything else? I also have a HSK Type 1 Turbo Timer. Can I leave it idling confidently? Or should I worry about overheating while idling as well? I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but I really do not want to have any more problems due to overheating.

Puerto Rico usually gets around 80-100+ Farenheit. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Depends on where you live actually, but I live in the coast, so I usually get around 80-100 degrees.

Thermostat with the lowest opening temp you can find, new radiator to replace old worn out one (also biggest one you can get in there), fans on all the time when engine running override switch, add Water Wetter to coolant, heavier weight oil (40, 20-40, 20-50?), maybe another fan in front of radiator pushing air (especially if you use A/C).

Ok here is the situation, my car overheated, after finding the source of the overheating, the cooling fan I repaired it. Then while I was on the freeway it started overheating again. all of the coolant evaporated out of the overflow tank. I tried everything, changing the thermostat, taking the thermostat out, changing the radiator cap, changing the radiator, and the same thing would happen. every time the car would get up to operating temp all of the coolant would boil out of the car and out of the overflow. At this point I thought it was a head gasket, so I did a test to see if there was exhaust gas in the coolant and there was so I thought for sure it was the head gasket. Here is the problem my head gasket is a Mitsu MLS, ARP studs, brand new sbr head. when i do a compression test on the car all of the cylinders come up at around 155, to start off there was no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil. now the car has been sitting it looks like there is coolant in the oil, but it could be condensation from sitting. I did the compression test when it was cold so I dont know what the problem could be, I was told that It could be a cracked coolant passage in the block or the head, what do you think could be the problem.

If it is your head gasket your would find coolant in your oil and white smoke smell sweet from your exhaust, but forgot check your water pump.

This technically would not be true, you can have a bad head gasket but no white smoke, and or coolant in the oil. When it does heat up does the temp go high and then slam back to cold? The head could be very slightly warped allowing exhaust fumes into the coolant but no other signs.

Just out of curiousity have you checked to see if the thermastat is opening and closing or if it is stuck closed. Put it in a boiling pot of water and watch to see if it opens if it doesnt open when the water is boiling than your thermastat is junk, and replace it.
