OVERHEATING? The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

Discuss all possible overheating problems and solutions here.

OK,
I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I went to change the thermostat however the one i bought was the wrong size

However after reviewing the old one, im starting to suspect the tstat isnt an issue.

I really hope it isnt the HG although it doesnt much because i'll be doing a rebuild during the summer.

If it were the HG, the car would probably be smoking, or if it were that bad, the oil would be mixed with coolant. When you checked the oil, you would probably notice this.

Make sure the thermostat opens ,Make sure your radiator fan turns on, When you start you car take the radiator cap off and see if there are bubbles coming out right away(indicates the HG could be blown). Is it loosing coolant?

Ok I installed a new tstat and it's still over heating. I check inside the radiator cap while the car was on and there were no bubbles nor was there any coolant on the dipstick.

Here is another pic of the temp (notice the rpms):

Not to sure how to check if it's losing coolant other than they're NO leaks on the ground.

The fans on the radiator arent on but could that be due to the fact the car isnt moving?

My biggest concern is the car overheats from just idling after 10mins. I let the car sit there for 10 mins today, without even revving it, and it overheated.

Sounds like you need a new water pump. I'm currently have simular problems to what your having execpt I dont have a high idle.

I was thinking a leak around the intake manifold, but that would probably get the maf all confused and the car would die I would think. I think your overheating is from the water pump as well at this point.

I'm pretty sure it's a bad water pump also so i've just purchased a new water pump. When i recieve the water pump i'm gonna have a mechanic install it and have him check out my rpms.

Btw should i install new t belts since he's replacing the water pump?

Upper and lower radiator hoses might need to be replaced as well as flushing your radiator. Check to see if those hoses feel soft, if so that is a good indicator to replace them. My car just had an overheating problem when it idled for around 10 minutes but would be fine once i started moving. Replaced the hoses and flushed the system and problem solved. goodluck

yes

and hydraulic tensioner

and balance shaft belt

and new pulleys

And to clarify-- did you say the fans on the radiator are not on? When it hits operating temperature they turn on. I want to say it was like 205? deg F that my 2g rad fan comes on. If it's not coming on, then that's your problem.

Alright Fellas,

I brought my car to a trusty mechanic and he gave me the bad news; the head gasket is no good.

I should've figured that out after realizing the car was consuming water/coolant.

Anywho I guess my rebuild is coming sooner than expected and thank you all for your kind suggestions.

Just curious how many miles are on the motor?

Well I guess it all makes sense then. Sorry to hear that its your headgasket, but atleast you figured it out. With 165k on it, its not exactly a baby or anything.

So i went today with my cousin and his friend to natick ma about 20 miles from me, since im picking up a 90 gst this weekend, it has sat for about 3 months, a mechanic did a run through when it still ran, and okayed it, we had to drive it to the gas station to pump air in the front tires, so im taking it nice and easy and slowly, i look down, temp gauge up to 75%, so thank god the gas station was only a mile away, and by being stupid when we popped the hood, i took off the radiator cap and coolant flew everywere, but not that much, we also have the front bumper off, because its been off and i didnt wanan bolt it back on, so we look inside the hose, theres nothing dryed empty, my cousin was driving my 1.8 behidn me to cover me up because we had no plated on the gst, so i pop my trunk grab my mobile coolant, only 75% left, through it in the car, wait 3 minutes, crank it, turns on, start driving, temp gauge stayed in the normal range, then raised up again right when we went back to the guys house to park it, we still need a lot more coolant as i can see, but im not sure if theres anythign else wrong, the fans did turn on too, but those dont help very much as it is, theres oil too since i checked that, i shoulda double checked that coolant before moving her, but when we had her idle for about 20 minutes, the temp gauge was fine, i hope theres nothing more serious, im pretty much broke, once i get paid this friday im paying the guy to get the car and title off him for only a grand so its a decent buy, and the alternator will need changing, since my volt meter i borrowed from my uncles garaged, read it at 12.60-12.65 moving various, but once we got it back, all the dash lights finally turned up and the air to fuel gauge started to work so idk

Replace the thermostat. If that doesnt help check for play in the water pump pulley. If its loose or wobbles time to replace it and if you have to replace the water pump might as well do the timing belt. OEM of course. But do everything in order. Check the thermostat first and hope for the best. Try to stick with OEM on all your parts if possible.

Welcome To Extreme PSI great people and great website. Good Luck
