Ask Me, Virginia
I read that "B" is supposed to be for the intake cam not the exhaust cam....

My exhaust cam is stamped "B" but looks like it should genuinely be an exhaust cam because it has no slot for the cam angle sensor. Additionally, the exhaust cam sproket is stamped with a "B".

The intake cam has no marking at all besides the ones on the body of the cam as pictured below.

Any thoughts?

FYI, the valve cover is a red jdm one with Mitsubishi on it. I bought the car this way, so I am not exactly sure what the real deal is.

I am also reading that 90 cams and early 91 cams are exactly the same as non-turbo cams?

If it doesn't have the CAS slots then it is an exhaust cam and the only cams that are the same as the N/T cams are the automatic turbo cams

Thanks for this.

Any thoughts on why it has a "B" on the end of the cam or why the cam caps are different?

I wonder what this could be about. Previous owner said that the cams were supposed to be "bigger" cams than stock. I doubt that statement based on other things I have found on the car.

This is what little I have been able to find in my searches:

NT DSM Forums :: View topic - DSM CAM STAMPINGS (scroll down to where the author mentions that "90-91 (early 91’s) turbo 5 speed cams are the exact same as non-turbo cams"

My 91 is stamped L&R, and numbered. I just assumed it was from machining at some point in time.

Thanks guys, I'll get a pic up.

As far as that link goes, I have read over that many times and it indicates that a B marking is for an intake cam.

On my car the "B" is definitely on my exhaust cam.

The only thing that I can think of is that the B that I see has nothing to do with the actual cam marking, but is just erroneus information.

Pics of the exhaust cam as promised...

Again, these are the exhaust cam and caps for both the exhaust and intake cams. Notice the cam caps at the sprocket end. Left is on the side labeled R1, R2, R3, etc. Right is on the side labeled L1, L2, L3, etc. This seems backwards. According to everything that I have read, a "B" should only be found on the intake cam. Further to this, this cam HAS to be for the exhaust because there is no slot for the CAS!

I am wondering if this is where the letter is supposed to be stamped.

I took pictures of the other markings in case they mean something.

Thanks

I just had my cam gear off last light if I woulda known thats were you were talking about I woulda looked closer

Lol, I noticed it on my cam gear last night to.

The "B" is on the exhaust cam and cam gear.

All of the other writing may mean something too, but I don't think it's common knowledge.
