Been a while since I posted, but my power antenna quit working. I can hear the motor running so I'm just going to assume the mast needs to be replaced. Only problem is I cannot seem to get the power antenna out of there. I unscrewed the bolt that's on the bracket part (1st pic) and I pulled off all the pieces that hold the antenna in place on the outside of the car (2nd pic) but it just doesn't seem to wanna come out.

Don't remove that bolt. See the two bolts in the bottom left of the top picture? PUll those and the motor assembly will come off. You have to disconnect the antenna relay if you want to get it out. I had to pull the back section off, and pull the plastic away to get mine out.

Speaking of which... Right after install, it decides it's gonna stop working. >.<

I just yanked. I mean I broke tons of shit doing it (antenna related shit) but after the antenna wouldn't want to go all the way up anymore, even with lubrication, I had had enough.
Never a problem since, even had good radio reception! The car looks stock on the outside, as if the antenna is just in the down position. I don't know how acceptable that is to you.

I just got rid of mine as well. I figured it was better to have reception issues than have to hear the motor get stuck everytime I got in the car. I guess that's because I never listen to the radio. But It didn't end up messing up the reception anyways.

I kinda want/need my antenna. My wife has her iPod, but sometimes I wanna hear the radio. I need something to listen to between the lifter tick, dying alternator, and the idiots who think bass is the only thing important for music.

I just wound up leaving it on and unplugging the antenna motor, screw it at least this way I don't have to hear it anymore

I brought this thread back from the dead because now that the weather is nice (and all my interior is out of my car) I figured I'd give a shot at fixing my power antenna again. I can still hear the motor running, but the antenna goes no where.

This time I actually got the antenna out of the car, so I'm already doing better than last time LOL.

My question is, how exactly do I fix this? Has anyone here ever fixed their power antenna themself and can give me some instructions? I tried this link Stealth 316 - Power Antenna but I found it a little confusing.

Well usually the nylon piece is broken off inside so you will have to remove the rest of it by disassembling the reciever piece. Once you get it all out and have the motor reassembled turn on the radio. Slide the new nylon coil into the antenna motor assy till it stops, DONT force it! Then have someone turn off the radio. It will pull the coil all the way in. Put the retaining ring back on and your done.

Alright thanks :thumb: I ordered a new mast, once it arrives I'll try installing it like you said and let you know how it goes

I had a hell of a time separating the mast from the rest of the antenna but if you pull hard enough (very hard in fact) it will come out. Sure enough the plastic part with the teeth on it was broke, now I just gotta wait for my new one to arrive.

Instead of removing mine I just unhooked the motor, and pushed the antenna all the way down..If you have a cd player, your probably not going to be using the radio..

I listen to it sometimes, I think it's more the fact that I know it's broken that bothers me LOL. You know what would be great, is if you could modify it some how so that it only came up when you switched to the radio (as opposed to always coming up anytime you turn the deck on).

It should work that way... Atleast thats how the oem one was in my 97 gst..

You know It's been so long since I had it working I couldn't even remember if it came on when you switched to the radio or not.

Well now I'm second guessing myself, but I was pretty sure it always came up when I turned the deck on. Guess I'll find out for sure soon enough. It's been a while since I've used mine as well.

I just pulled mine. The Antenna extends when the radio powers on. However, I found me a stationary one, so I installed that. Only to find that the ends are different between the power and non. FML.

The antenna should only try to come up when the deck is switched to radio. If it doesn't, something isn't hooked up somewhere. I need to fix the one on the GST... sounds like a horrible grinding noise when it's switched to the radio, so we've been using the cd player portion for awhile now.

Where did you order your new mast?

Try it out and post the details..I'd love to see if it comes on when you turn on the radio or when the deck comes on..

Will do :thumb:

eBay where else? ;) There's many sellers to choose from. Here's an example 91-99-MITSUBISHI-3000GT-POWER-ANTENNA-MAST

...but yeah that's exactly what mine was doing, making a grinding noise. The nylon part probably broke on yours as well, apparently it's pretty common.

Its suppose to only go up when the radio is on if u have an aftermarket deck then there should be a power antenna wire and the antenna isn't connected to it so its probably on the remote wire of the radio.

Hmmm :hmm: I'll have to check that out, because the more that I think about it the more I'm almost 100% sure that it always came up whenever I turned the deck on and yes it's aftermarket (Alpine).

- UPDATE -

First attempt at installing the new antenna mast didn't go so well... I followed the directions and when the motor started pulling the nylon string part in, it snapped it right out of the antenna!

I'm done.. done done DONE WITH IT! :banghead: I'll be picking up a regular antenna in the near future.

wow. I replaced 3 that way in the past and never had a problem?

I don't know but I'm done screwing around with this thing. Maybe the one they sent me was too short? Who knows. I really don't feel like having to wait for it to be shipped back and then wait some more for a new one, all for a $5 part. Forget it I'll just consider it a loss and go pick up a regular antenna.
