Can too much oil cause lifter tick/knock?

When my motor hit 500 miles after a stock rebuild (new bearings/pistons) I switched over to a 5w30 synthetic motor oil to run in the car. It's at about 700 miles now and I'm beginning to notice an odd tick, sorta like lifter tick, increased with the RPM but I'm not 100% sure if it goes away after 3k rpm. According to my logger, I'm getting some crazy phantom knock at part throttle under 3k rpm, could 1 or 2 counts then 20 or 30 then vanishes. I added 5.25qt of oil just to find out our cars take roughly 4 to 5...could too much oil be causing a lifter tick or some sort of knock?

It was probably the switch to 5w30 that let you hear the tick more. Get some 3g lifters (on ebay, about $80 shipped) to permanently get rid of the problem or switch to at least 10w30 synthetic.

I'm starting to think it's not lifter tick... sorry for how shitty this sounds, my cameras suck.

It sounds WAY louder in the video...and you can't hear anything like that at idle.

Edit: Wow..........turns out over half my oil is missing............

Oil pan...axle...firewall..lower timing/front cover...oil filter/housing/oil pressure sender just COVERED in oil....see I had a bad oil leak before coming from the pan seal...used some cheap ass RTV, so we dropped it and used form Permatex No. 2 and let it sit for 48 hours before adding oil ### I was tired of this oil leak...and it is still mushy...........WTF

That will sure make it tick.:ohdamn:
What do you mean half your oil is missing? Did you drain it and only get out like 2-2 1/2 qts of oil? How do you know half is missing? Is it not showing on the dipstick at all?

sigh....

Here's the kicker...this bucket you see, when draining the oil during break in easily fills it to the TOP...then some....

That's after it's 'dripped' for a hour..........

Dip stick was suspiciously dry....it would appear to be 'full' but the other side of it had ZERO oil on it...that was my first WTF instinct. I have a newer dip stick that doesn't blow out, the markings on it are either empty or full.

Update: Got oil pan off, a little bit of fine metal powder in what oil is left. I count about 2 or 3 VERY VERY thin flakes...going to pull the rod caps in hope that there is no damage.

good luck man , hope you did not damage anything

put a heavier oil once everything is back in place and sealed. use a 20-50w castrol its amazing on our cars.

good luck

Really? That seems quite heavy for a turbo car...I'm going to have the crank polished. Nothing catches on my nail but I don't want another repeat of this bs!

i am using this oil for a year now with absolutely no problem at all, no lifter tick at all. and guess what it provides a very good protection to your engine even at high tempreture and when on boost.

i was using before a lighter oil and the sound of the enigne was different. now with this heavy oil my engine is quite and smooth.

I have been using 20-50 on on mine for at least 6 months. It actually works very well. When thinned from heat, it is still about as thick as most 10-30. Not the best option in the extreme cold, but it works well.

Oh yeah, while you've got it all apart... knock that dent out of the bottom of your pan. It puts it a little to close to the pick up tube. It may actually be touching it and blocking oil flow a bit, as I have seen on a few engines before.

Don't use heavy oil, it robs power and masks various sounds which could alert you to other things, it's one of the tricks used car dealers use.

which power you are talking about man? you mean he will loose 20 Hp because he is using a heavy oil??? this only makes a difference on race cars not on a daily driven car that sees traffic everyday. if what you are saying is true then i would rather loose 30 Hp than having my oil thined when hot and damage my engine.

20-50 W is extremly good for our cars.

cheers :thumb:

20W is thick for any car. 10w30 is the best overall oil to use, synthetic if you have the money for it.
