can bad lifters cause damage?

I am planning on replacing my lifters soon but I was just curious. Can old, noisy, worn-out lifters cause any kind of engine damage? Such as poor oil flow or anything to do with the camshafts or valves?

One problem is that they can destroy your cam if they loosen too much.
