I'm thinking about putting cams in my car. I want some HKS 272s but are they drop ins or do I have to do springs and retainers? I have only found HKS 264 exhaust and 272 intake. Does anyone know where to get 272 intake and exhaust? Also I want to take off my cruise control cable and box because I don't use it and switch to the non cruise control, what would I have to do?

The 272 don't require springs and retainers but are highly recommended. The 272 will help to increase top end power but stock springs do not perform well at higher rpms so upgrading the springs and retainers would be in your best interest. Shop around for the combo 272/272, you should find it easily. Several supporting venders carry them though not perhaps in hks. Don't limit yourself to just one manufacturer. As for the cruise you will just need to get a non cruise cable. I would check out the classifieds and keep an eye open there.

I really dont have my car at high rpms alot. Im just thinking itll help my time at the dragstrip. Ive heard HKS's are the best, plus I really like HKS products so thats why Im really wanting to get those. As for the cruise couldnt you take the box off to get a lil more space under the hood?

The 264/272 seems to be a very good street combo, but you could always go with a delta regrind with hks 272 profile. The cruise delete requires use of a new throttle cable.

Wouldn't you want to have the same degree in cams? Since you want everything out that goes in. Do you know where to buy the stuff required to do the cruise delete?

If you are not looking to raise your power band than i would stay away from cams for now. You car will likely be slower at the lower rpm's than with the stock cams. There are a bunch of other things that can be upgraded to make power before touching the valvetrain.

Well I got a bigger turbo, intake, exhaust, 1000cc injectors, and tuned for E85.

IF you plan on turning some higher rpm's than you will definitely make power with a set of 272's. You are going to be spooling a little slower, and lose some low end power, so the car will feel a big doggy down low.

For starters, good luck finding new legit HKS products that are readily available. Even if you find used HKS cams, they are about the price of brand new Kelford, Crower, or GSC cams. The Delta DKS cams are a regrind (copy) of HKS but only about $300 without the core charge. You can find them here.

But whether an upgraded spring is needed doesn't just depend on the advertised duration (264 or 272), the entire cam profile has to be considered such as lift and ramp rate. It's also a matter of how worn out your stock springs are. The DKS 272 cams have a less aggressive profile so stock springs can usually handle them up till about stock rev limit. However, for a more aggressive cam (Crower or Comp), or higher than stock rev limit, or with stock springs that have heavy usage, or any combination of the 3, you will need better springs. Otherwise you seriously risk floating valves which not only kills horsepower, it can kill engines.

Back in the day I used bc 272s in my laser with stock springs and retainers with no problem.

I have read many reviews on cams myself, I have also spoke with Lucas at English Racing and he recommended GSC Cams. I did some more research and talked to buschur racing they offer their own cams, when I had asked them what they thought of the GSC Jarrod told me they are a very well made cam and make incredible power. I have decided thats what Im using. As far as lift and duration that depends on what your goals are. I would definatley upgrade the valvetrain for an extra $400 its well worth it. Look at my build thread I show before and after pics on Cruise delete.
