hey everyone in the dsm world i just bought a 99gst two weeks ago from a old lady it only had 70,000 miles on it for $5000 bone stock. before i start upgrading my turbo i need to have a way to stop it because "speed does not kill tying to stop does". i was looking at this brembo set up, i have a thousands dollars to spend and im new to the game so any suggestions. Im getting a sweet pair of 18" rims with a chrome lip and i need something with style functional at the same time.:dsm:

you might want to look into a set of gsx calipers and rotors which is an upgrade for a gst that way you can have money left over for some go fast goodies

Four-piston calipers are more than enough on the street. If my eyes aren't deceiving me, those are a set of 4-pots.

Six-piston and eight-piston calipers are for those track days.

This set up is basically what comes on the Evo, so if you have driven one of those then it will perform about the same.

race cars dont were "chrome" even on lips i think its cheezzzzy (is your car), by the way hot expensive brakes !! i went with the 2g awd front callipers and brembo gold drilled rotors to match all around, for my weight i stop on a dime!

They do have style, but I agree that's a bit overkill for the street. I'd just buy a nice set of cross drilled and slotted rotors with some pads and you're good to go. I still have stock cali's on my GST. I painted them black and they have all the sex appeal I need... haha

I have also done the 2 piston caliper upgrade on the three diferent DSM's that I have owned and it works great. Plus it is rather inexpensive to do. Either route you choose will be able to stop your car better than you would be able to with the stock single piston calipers.

hey man i got those baer brakes they run for about 800 and they work great, u do not need an overkill brake setup like those brembos, those r for heavy track use, you would do just fine with gsx brake, but if u want something a little flashy then i say go with the baers they still look good and are still too much brake power for a stock gst u wont need to upgrade for a very long time but if u dont care about looks go wiht the gsx upgrade with some drilled rotors and stainless lines

Well in your first post you said you have a thousand to spend on brakes, so unless that was supposed to say thousandS, those are way out of your price range. The yellow colour your talking about is a finish to prevent corrosion & rust & will wear off on the brakeing surface area. If you want to spend around $1000 Bear has a nice setup with 2 piston calipers. Wilwood also offer a couple setup in that price range with 4 piston calipers & if your interested I would call Todd a TCE. Thats where I got my Wilwood setup, he's a supporting vendor here & great to deal with. He has some kits abit under $1k & some for abit above depending on what your looking for.

Im extremely happy with my setup, it may not be a full out track setup but it is more then enough for the streets. I scared the crap out of myself first time I was trying them out, wanting to do a quick stop at around 100 mph & they locked up (no abs ;) ). Since the upgrade haven't experienced any brake fade. You don't really need super huge brakes on the streets as most street tire compounds can grip enough to even make use of them. Plus you have to remember after such an upgrade you can brake much quicker then 95% of the other poeple on the streets. So while I may be able to stop quick, Im now always checking my rear view mirror to see if the guy behined me is going to get stopped.

After doing a lot of research with my brother for his brake setup this is what we found to be the most cost effective street/some track setup:
-Power Slot slotted brake rotors (http://www.buybrakes.com/store/583PSL)
-Axxis XBG (Metal Master) Brake Pads (http://www.buybrakes.com/store/45-05300M)
-Stainless steel brake lines (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclbrakes.htm)
-Motul 600c brake fluid (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclbrakes.htm)
-Used GSX calipers (bought from the classifieds section)
-and some Speedbleeders just for the heck of it (not necessary) (http://www.speedbleeder.com/)
Note: we haven't put all this stuff on his car yet so I don't have first hand experience with how it will perform, but like I said we did a lot of research and this is the best we found for his budget. Good luck!

I think you should go with the GSX 2 piston calipers because of the price difference. If you plan on using this car as a track car, then I'd say go with bigger calipers but if it's going to be a daily driver and occasional drag/track car, then I'd think the 2 piston calipers would be enough.

Another thing to think about is if you plan on running your 18" rims all the time or not. If you get the 'expensive' upgrade kits, usually you have to have at least a 17" rim or bigger to clear the calipers. I know you said it was bone stock so I'd assume you have the stock 17" rims on there so you should be good but it's just another thing to think about. If you went with the GSX calipers, you could run 16" rims and up.

Also, with the cross drilled and slotted rotors, some will eat your pads up faster than others. And some pads will eat your rotors faster than others. Again, if you plan on using it for just street, then do some research and get ones that are recommended for street use (such as the above post)...if not, get the ones that'll stop you the quickest!
