I've had the itch to program something lately and have noticed how many times I'm linking to formulas, doing math on my own and posting the results, or having people post certain questions that could be easily answered using some form of calculator. So this got me thinking on how I could make this easier. I have started to assemble some simple calculators that people could use, which will hopefully answer some of the easier questions that are posted (e.g. "What injector size do I need...?").

Here's the first one I created. None of these will be dummy proof right now (if I get around to it, great), so you could produce some weird results. However, I think they're pretty straight forward and no one should have a problem using them at all.

Please give me some feedback on this one.
E85 Global Calculator - DSMtuners

Also, if you have a calculator in mind that you'd like to see created, let me know! I'm open to trying to figure out anything, within reason. It all will boil down to the math being the hardest part.

Here is what I've created so far. These will eventually be added once I get some feedback on how the above one works, looks, etc. This way I can make sure they all function as the masses would like.

E85 Global
-see actual calc above
Fuel Mixture
-shows you percent Ethanol, Octane rating, Est. Stoich and Spec Gravity based on your input mixture of gas and E85
Fuel Pressure
-shows you "new" injector size after an increase/decrease of base fuel pressure
Fuel Requirements
-shows how much fuel you will need to flow to support a target airflow and AFR
Injector Size
-shows appropriate injector size to support a desired crank HP with certain base fuel pressure and number of injectors

You should get 302. But beside that, what would you have expected to get? With E85 requiring more fuel than pump gas, the stock injectors will act smaller. So if they are 450cc for pump gas, then will be smaller on E85 - which the calculator shows 302cc.

There will be a comment made to the E85 calculator that says the global number produced is not an exact/definite answer. The calculation will provide you a great starting point, but should be monitored and adjusted when necessary.

Any other feedback, input, questions, or suggestions, both on the above calendar and new ones is appreciated.

I understand your calculator now.

Using 100% E85 means you truly are using E85 and not E80 or anything else? I checked my local station that has E85 a couple weeks ago, and it had roughly E40 at the pump.

If 100% E85 means strictly 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline in the tank, then in my case I would put in 55% E85 and 45% gasoline for E40?

Ethanol content calculation:

Q: What percent of E85 is E40?

A:
85% x P% = 40%

(85/100) x ( P /100) = (40/100)

P = .40/.85 x 100 = 47 %

Maybe one of those super smart engineers should double check my math since I'm just a 31 year old X-ray tech. It's been awhile since I've done any algebra. :coy:

Ya, that sounds pretty close. For some reason the math isn't coming to me at the moment.

Are they selling E85 which, after tested, is found to be E40? Or is it sold some other way?

Yup, pump still shows E85. I paid like $3.80/gal for it too, which is more expensive than 92 octane here.

Right on, looks correct to me sir. :thumb:

Is there any way these values can be used for something that isn't dsmlink? I know a lot of guys could get use out of this that burn their own chips.... of course many do their own calcs, but it'd be cool to include.

Honestly, I don't know how ECUflash and burning your own chips works. I've never seen them in action. If someone wants to explain to me how it works, I could try and make ones that work or adapt the ones already there to work.

Sent the rest of the ones listed above to Chris the other night, so I'll let you know once he has them up on the site.

I shoot X-rays too!

Say WHAT!?
It's $2.80/gal here, 93oct is $3.69/gal on avg.
(but there is only one e85 pump in all of Austin)

And OP thanks for this tool, I've got places to get this elsewhere, but it makes it that much easier being accessible on this site! :)
But also, it would be nice for the 1g guys to have a way to calculate it with the different base fuel pressures.

Yup, I know a lot of these calculators can be found elsewhere, but I figured having them here would be much easier. This way when someone asks "I want to have this amount of HP. What size injectors?", we can link them to the calculator hosted here.

As for 1g owners with different base fuel pressure, you'll be able to do this calculation by combining 2 of the calculators I created. First you can use the Fuel Pressure calculator to figure out what your injector size is at the "new fuel pressure" (i.e. the lower 1g pressure) and then plug that new injector size into the E85 calculator and figure out the appropriate global %.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the Global % used for? Link? I understand the injector sizing, just not that.

Handy calc though. I was wondering if my 550's would support e85 use.... And since they're 360's at 100%, I'd say that's a no. Not pure e85 anyhow.

Thanks again for you dedication! :thumb:

But i'll let link to that for the most part! YAAA

Brian,

I would suggest using gallons for the E85 and Fuel, rather than percentages. It's a lot easier to enter how many gallons you add to whatever is in the tank than to to calculate the percentages.

Also, you need to take into account the ethanol % of the pump gas, since pure gas is getting harder to find these days. It doesn't make a huge difference, but I've noticed a percent or two of variation in the global fuel values. You can lift the formulas for that from LinkTools if you want, since that is basically what it is doing. In fact, the fuel mixture calcs could be combined with the global calculator which would really simplify things.

I definitely think calculators like this are a great addition to the site.

I'll take a look at doing this tonight and see what I can come up with.

Thanks!

Just got Brian's other calculators added to that page... waiting on a graphic from him for his pie chart calculator. Once you guys go through them and test them I'll do some style sheet work to make them look like they weren't designed in 1995.

Craig, I haven't looked at the E85 calculator that you mentioned. If you get a chance to check it out today, let me know what you come up with and I'll change the code and send it back to Chris. If not, I'll try and get to it later today/tonight.

Thanks Chris! Feel free to change any of the look/feel of those. I obviously spent more time on the coding and didn't care what it looked like.

I can't get any of the calculators on the page linked to in the first post to do anything. Are you still working on it Chris, or did I miss something?

BTW - Brian, if the Fuel Mix calculator came straight from LinkTools, I need to get you the updated version. I revised it so that it will work with any ethanol blend; as it is now, it makes some assumptions about E85 which can be a little confusing in some cases.
