Buying a dsm HELP!!!

so as the title says im looking into buying a dsm. and there are a couple things that just dont sound right to me. After doing some searching on here, and on google i came up with nothing so im just going to ask.

The guy claims a couple things.
First off, it a 97 talon tsi awd.
He claims theres a shep stage 2 tranny in it. I was wondering if there is any way to tell just by looking at the tranny (or by driving it) to see if it truly is a shep tranny.

The guy also claims the car has a evo rear end. Hes saying its a 5 bolt read end. And i have found no information on a 5 bolt rear end, or an evo rear end in a dsm. And if it is possibly, how could i find out. ( i mean getting under the car and checking out the rear diff.)

the more plausible of my questions is the guy is claiming it has a eagle crankshaft and new bearings and rods, so I dont have to worry about crankwalk. This makes some sense due to crankwalk being mitsu's manufactured cranks not matching the bearings.

these are my unanaswered questions after doing lots of searching.

The guy is telling me he had receipts but cannot find them at the moment. So before i make any decision id like to find these things out. (Especially becuase the deal would definitly not be worth it if none of this is true)

any input would be greatly appreciated.

The crank can be verified by pulling the pan but I doubt he will allow that. Or have him contact the vendor he got it from and they can send another invoice. The trans can be verified by calling John and asking him to vrify the purchase or having him send a duplicate invoice. The diff I have no Idea.

tell him to show you the old crank that came out of the car also the old rear end. anybody with a brain would know not to get rid of these parts after they take them out. see what his replie is and judge how honest he seems from his response. cause he wont exspect you to ask him that. maybe you will catch him in his own lie if he is lieing that is.

Yeah, how much does he want for it? At the very least we could help you figure out what is a reasonable price for it with/without the mods. The rear end all I can think of is it may have 5 bolt rear axles? I have also never heard of this but that should be as simple as looking to see if the axles are indeed connected with 5 bolts or 4 bolts.

its actually a trade. He just had a kid, and he was looking for a family car. Im trading him a 2000 vw golf 4dr 5spd n/t. but ima ask him about the crank and and the tranny. and as long as the rear end is a 4 bolt, i dont really care. I just have never heard of a 5bolt or a evo rear end going into a dsm.

im going to call him here in a little bit to ask him those q's about the crank and tranny. but is there any way to identify the rear end just by looking at it. Ive tryed to look up pics but havent come back with anything good. i mean identify if its a 4 bolt or not. so well see.

like i mentioned before he should have kept all the parts that came off the car. so ask him about that also. like for instance ask him if he still has the old trans. and the rear end and if he still has the old crank doesnt sound like to bad of a trade to me but im addicted to dsm's. haha

i just got some info outta him. Hes saying its a 4bolt rear end. BUt the old rear end was pretty much destroyed so he scraped it. and the crank he just got rid of because of the issue of crankwalk. but hes saying that he just bought the transmission rebuild kit from shepard. and had the tranny rebuilt. Im pretty much going to tell him that i want receipts for the crank and the tranny. and that he can call the vendor where he got them, to get new receipts. because im trading my daily for it. O and heads have been ported and polished, larger valves? the head has been rebuilt. car has an idle issue. but i think it has something to do with the jackass venting the aftermarket bov. also hes saying hes modified the MAF. removing honeycombs and what not. So if everything is legit the first thing to go is that damn BOV getting replaced for a 1g recirculated. but he just said hell call me back, and im starting to think i spooked him ### something was up.

A few things to think about just from what i read. All of this is likely related to either poor maintenance or abuse or no clue how things should be or maby a combonation of all of them. The car crankwalked and needed a tranny rebuild as well as a new rear diff all rescently? The thing has an idle issue maby because the bov is vented and the maf is hacked but what if there is more to the issue? Id say Pass on this trade. It sounds like he has hacked it up and wants out .

IMO I would start with a bone stock DSM. You never know if things are hacked together. It gives you a little piece of mind knowing everything that has been done to it. Plus you know it probably wasnt beat on. Just my 2 cents

Receipts, receipts, receipts.

Never take anyone for their word on anything regarding replacement parts unless they have receipts to prove it. You'll be taken for a wild ride that Lord only knows where it'll go. It sounds like the guy doesn't know what he's talking about and quite possibly is lying about some of the parts he put in his car. If your gut tells you to walk away, I'd walk away.

yeah. ive come to that conclusion. I dont think i can trust what he says. Especially when im trading my daily, and I need a dsm to be a daily. Ive actually got a deal in the works for a 1gb with a 6bolt swap. Ive been talking to the guy for a while. The car is bone stock with the exception of a bastard 20g and a fmic and a turbo back exhaust. The 1g also has a narrowband. But that wont do me too much good.... The mileage is a little higher on the 1g but thats to be expected. And all the maintenace is up to date. TBelt & tensioner etc etc. But the car was completely stock other then that, and didnt have any issues. I think im going to follow my original plan with the 1gb. The guy isnt that easy to get ahold of, but hes def not making his car look alot better then what it is. Thanks for all your guys input! I hoping to have my dsm within the next couple of weeks. When i do there will be tons of pics.

Ive been on the forums reading for a while. I have prior knowledge of cars and forced induction in general. But never on a dsm. I just cant wait to get my hands on a dsm...
