Well I didn't think this would be a big deal to repair until I realized that the ABS sensor ring makes it impossible to take broken lug studs out without removing it. Problem is...I don't see any way to take the hub assembly apart without using a press. I took the entire hub off the car and there is no access hole or anything to back the studs out.

To make a long story short the guy at the tire shop tightened my lug nuts down with a heavy duty impact. Got a few miles away and the wheels felt wobbly. I was a block away from home so I got lucky....
Took off the centercaps...3 lugnuts lying inside of it with broken studs inside. Kinda need to get to work on Monday..so any help with this would be appreciated. Is a press nessessary for me to repair this?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, not a bad guess. I've never been in Poor Red's, actually, what with being underage and all. Doesn't really look like the kind of place I'd want to hang around anyway, haha. Also around where I stay I see more multi-colored primered Hondas and beat up trucks than gold Caddys.

I knew my brakes were messed up, but I couldnt get my lugs off...

So, I devised a plan to get a free brake inspection, which would lead to the guys at the shop using their impact guns to loosen the lugs and then allow me to change the rotors and pads myself

Well, I eneded up with the guy at the shop breaking off a wheel stud, and refusing to remove another stud on the same wheel in fear that it would break off too.....here I am with bad brakes and a broken wheel stud (rear) The guys at the shop also said my calipers "might" be messed up and gave me an estimate of about $400 for just rear brakes...

WHAT DO I DO NOW??????

Please help......

Get a Gorilla lug wrench and take off the other nuts. If you break studs, replace them. It's only a minor nuisance, really.

Of course, the shop that broke your stud owes you a new one, but I don't know if they understand that sort of thing where you are.

You probably don't need rotors, just new pads.

well, today i was gonna put my new enkei rs-v's on, when one of the lugnuts started spinning w/ the stud on the right rear, then i put on the wheels on all the other sides and came back to the wheel, we had to drill it out. then taking off the wheel on the right rear side again, another one started spinning!!!! i was like FAWK!!!!! so i gave up and started putting my stocks on, when a lugnut broke off on my right front!!!!!! so now i'm running on 3 lugnuts on my right rear and 4 lugs on my right front!!!! what luck! and they all threaded on perfectly till i seated the lugs against the wheels. i've never gone too hard on the lugs w/ the airgun and they're always hand tightened on before i even use the gun so i know it can't be me. oh well thank god i work at a tire shop. i think it might be my launches tearing up those studs. oh well, 4 days before raceday too. any one else have bad luck today?

that really isn;t safe to be driving liek that 3 studs holding on when should be five...

that's alot of strain on them.. i've had taht happen to wear they all break at once, and your setting on the side of the road with no whell... no fun

but hey that's jsut my experience... ass far as my vent i jsut got a 6 bolt swap done.. now my fvalves are chattering i think it jumped time

ltr... Justin :talon:

same thing for me too... was switching my rims and the first 3 went fine. Then I come to the passenger side front tire and a stud breaks. So, I put the rim on with the 4 lugs and drive to the dealer to buy 5 new studs. Get home, take the rim off, and in doing so, another stud breaks. So, then I discover that my garage mechnical skills dont include replacing wheel studs... so I have to stick the rim on with just 3 studs and drive to my local shop and get them to replace them all.

Hmmm, I thought you guys were talking about stripping the threads on the stud when I saw the topic. That is odd I never had that happen to me, only time I saw that happen when my dad (of all people) used an impact wrench to START the lugs. I'm not sure why he did that because he is the one who I learned from and I would never do such a thing but it was on my bros 3S VR-4 which he had just finished removing and rebuilding, so I guess by that time he was ready just to get it on the road.

THIS JUST IN: more bad luck guys, hehe. i just found out while i was under my car that that my crankpulley seal is bad along w/ my water pump!!!!FOOK!!!!! oh well, bein' a DSM'er is a practice of patience but its alright she'll be perfect here in couple days :thumb:

One broke while I was driving. OMG

Then 2 other ones broke while I was tightening the remaining 4 down.

That is why you need to get hub centering rings with your aftermarket wheels. The hub is supposed to take all shear load, the wheel studs only clamp down the wheel. You can look at studs where they broke and see whether it was from twisting or shear fatigue.

I have 2 broken studs on my PSF Wheel.
So I've changed broken studs on other cars before, it was a snap.
I've heard that it's a PITA to change broken studs on our cars with ABS.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I have Mitsu Studs and Lugs....

I'll check my CD Manual....

Peace

I had 5 broken lugs on the stock wheels....no idea how it happened, i bought the car that way---u wouldnt beleive the way that thing wobbled on the way home....felt like death wobble or serious driveline vibes (any 4x4 guys would know what thats like)

I have a 92 GSX and two of my lugs snapped off. I have the brake caliper & rotor off but I can't get the thing off that actually houses the lugs. I also took the large axle nut off. Should this thing just slide right off or is there something else holding it on? Oh yeah, I'm working on the front and my car has ABS if that matters. Thanks

Don't mess with the axle nut.

Take a BFH and knock the old stud loose from its knurl or press fit. Rotate the hub until it comes clear of knuckle behind it. This may be one spot better than the rest. Get the new stud and install from the same spot. Tap it in as best you can lightly and then put a nut with some washers under it on the thread and 'pull' it through with the nut until it's seated. Torque to about 100lbs each pull. Put wheel back on and do again with the lug nut. Couple of times and you'll have it.

OK, ABS cars must be different because I can't rotate mine because theres no room behind it to slide the stud out of. I've knocked the broken studs loose already but theres a cup holding them in and I can't figure out how to get that cup off. The stud is already loose but theres no room behind it to slide out.

On mine when i had to replace a broken lug i didn't have the parking brake set and squeezed the E- brake bads while my dad put the new one in. To pop out the old one hammer it back like the previous post says; this is after you took off off the brake rotor and caliper assembly right? It was kinda tricky getting the broken lug out though. good luck :thumb:

Just thought I'd follow up on this in case anyone else needs to know. I finally had to put the rotor back on the car backwards and bolt in on with the lug nuts, then I took a three jaw puller and pulled the whole assembly off so that I could knock the broken studs out and replace them with new ones. I wouldn't recommend this unless you are replacing your rotors anyway like I was. I'm not positive but I believe that cars without ABS are alot easier.

I used to own a acura integra. The way I would replace broken studs is hammer out the broken one and insert the new one from behind and use 3 washers and the nut to press it back in. Is it possible to do the same on DSMs?
