Well I didn't think this would be a big deal to repair until I realized that the ABS sensor ring makes it impossible to take broken lug studs out without removing it. Problem is...I don't see any way to take the hub assembly apart without using a press. I took the entire hub off the car and there is no access hole or anything to back the studs out.

To make a long story short the guy at the tire shop tightened my lug nuts down with a heavy duty impact. Got a few miles away and the wheels felt wobbly. I was a block away from home so I got lucky....
Took off the centercaps...3 lugnuts lying inside of it with broken studs inside. Kinda need to get to work on Monday..so any help with this would be appreciated. Is a press nessessary for me to repair this?

Thanks in advance

I have tried searching but was able to find anything fitting my case.

I was doing fron breaks on my 91 awd tsi and 2 bolts snapped off when i was taking off the wheels. not sure how, but they did.
my main question is, can i replace them without taking off the hib? becuase there is a cup like thing behind it, that is used for the abs or vss so read off of. any ideas? thanks

Its not easier to replace the hub, its easier to just replace the bolt. Take a heavy hammer and pnch out the bolt. Go to Kragen or autozone and buy the lug nut bolt. you will see that it needs to be pressed in. So what I did was put the bolt in and replace the wheel. Than proceeded to screw on the nut. You can also use alot of washers to space the nut. What you do is screw the nut on and as you do this it will press in the new bolt. I've done a couple myself. Its not a big deal.

it is snapped about half way down so i know i have to take them out. and while i am taking them two out, im going to take out the rest.
i know how to put in a wheel stud, im just not sure if you have to take out the whole kunckle and hub, then seperate them apart.

You shouldn't have to remove the hub, I never have and I don't think a 1g is all THAT different. Just tap it out with a hammer and rotate the hub around until it falls out.

+1
Exactly.

But i have abs. therefore there is a hub that is behind the studs. and the hub is not open in the back. i think its a reference for the abs to go off of. And there is no way to get that off because it is in-between the wheel hub and the knuckle.

i see that some people have used a slide hammer? and idea where i can get a one with a bar/plate to mount to the wheel studs. maybe rent one from autozone?

Well today i was able to get my wheel studs replaced. What i did was go to auto zone, and paid for a slide hammer and a metal bracket that mounts on your wheel studs. (I later returned them for the full price). I hook it up to the hub and within 4 hits the hub was out. I went ahead and took of the knuckle and re-greased the bearings. I then used a arbor press to press the hub back onto the knuckle. I put a big socket on the back side of the knuckle (for the rear cup) and by doing that it sat the knuckle up higher and mostly level. I then pressed it on and it was good as new. Put everything back together and headed to the track.

Okay, I am getting my tires today, and decided it'd be easiest to just take the tires and wheels to a shop for mount and balance. Well I got all the lugs loose on one wheel, then the passenger side started to give me problems. The first lug I tried to loosen on the front started to loosen, then just sheared the stud right off. The next one cracked. So I moved to the back and proceeded to shear off THREE lugs. So what should I do? Just keep shearing them off in order to get them off, and just replace them? And what do I do about the cracked one? They are those lugs that have the Allen head insert so that they don't look ugly with regular lugs.

TIA,
Sawyer

Put copper grease on the new ones to stop this Happening again also try doing sharp jerks when loosening nuts instead of constant pressure some times it works, also if you get a nut or bolt that starts to loosen then becomes stiff put some lubricant on the visible threads and tighten the nut back up so that the lube gets inside of the nut . :thumb:

This is why impact wrenches are a bad idea on lugs. Always make sure you/your shop hand tightens lugs before going apeshit with them.

So a kid I know that works at a shop said I could weld some nuts to the cracked lugs. In theory that'll work.

As in weld them on with the wheels on the car ROFL

If so you need new friends, these ones are trying to kill you.

Just pound the studs out the back, buy a lug nut with an open top and a deep well socket. Carefully tap the stud in without damaging the threads and then use the nut to pull it tight. Tighten the nut to the same force you'd use to clamp the wheel (between 100-110 ft/lbs - I always use 105) and then repeat for the next 19 lugs.

This happened to me recently. My had a flat tire in the back and I cannot take the lugs off since I have those allen type lugs and the keys (2 of them) broke inside the lug. My car sat for a few months in the garage.

One day my dad came by and saw it. He got a can of PB Blaster and a Hammer and Chisel. I told him "WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO??? My wheels are $600 apiece!!!!" He sat down and whaked the lug with the hammer/chisel. 3 hits and the lug was loose - enough for me to take them off by hand!! We did this for all 20 lugs. No shop wanted to do it for me, all I had to do was call my dad.

Never again will I get those allen-type lugs. I will also insist that the tire shop hand tighten mine and not overdo them with the impacts. I have tuner lugs, they should not be tightened to 100 ft-lbs. as the factory lugs.

What I did was just pulled the whole spindle/knuckle assembly, hub, speed sensor ring and all, and just punched it out. I know I could do it again fairly easily.
