Stuck on the interstate LOL since I have free time waiting on a ride and tow I want to get everyones opinion on what could be the cause. I was driving down the interstate no problems when the car just shuts off. The electrical was still on but engine just quit. First thing I checked was timing belt and its still there. I checked spark its there. It actlike it wants to start when I turn it over it spit and sputters. Just put gas in it this morning. Any help is greatly welcome

My girl is having the same ish problem..I think its the crank position sensor..I'm gonna hook it up to a computer this weekend and see if the computer will tell me if that's the case..

Her car will just shut off intermediatly..Then will not like to start up right away..Then will be fine for a couple days..Then do it somemore..And it only happens in the summer..We have had this problem since last summer, but all winter it didn't act up..Then summer came and it started doing it again..

You have a 420A and I would be willing to bet it is your crank position sensor. Used to have a POS neon back in the day and this was my problem. Watch, in a week you will try to start the car for shits and giggles and it will fire right up. But eventually die on you again. It is real easy to replace. 2 bolts on the back of the block. Forget how much it costs from the parts store but I think I paid like $90 for mine? Something like that.

I'm trying to listen for it but this highway is very loud. I was thinking tho, if it was the cps wouldn't it not get spark? This sux its also my birthday today :(

So the CPS would stop the fuel? I got the car home and I do not hear the fuel pump prime when the key is turned to run. It usually does but now it has stopped so im amusing the fuel pump has died. Is there any tests I can do with a multi meter to check like OHMS tests?

Ok Im guessing my last post didnt go throught LOL.

Well I installed a brand new fuel pump and fuel filter today and now it will crank but spits and spudders. When It does crank it will run for about 1-2 seconds and quit. I have checked and tested every spark plug and also checked timing, all are good there. Im coming to the conclusion of the CPS or CAS. Would one of these being dead cause it to still try to crank but die instantly? Also I have a fluke DMM, Is there a certain resistance these sensors should be or what is the best way to test them without just buying new ones.

Ok I recieved my new crank position sensor only to find out that I too suffer what 1995 models do and that is the pig tail is wrong.

Anybody know a place were I can get a pigtail cheap or may know the part number?

I NEED to get this car back on the road!

I need a pigtail to match this sensor

I don't think our cars prime the fuel system until you start cranking the engine. I'm not sure if this goes for the 420a, but that's how the 63' is.

I would test the cps before you just replace it. Get out the old ohm meter and find a spec.

Also pull the plugs after you try to start it a few times to make sure the injectors are firing. If they are wet you are getting fuel.

Good luck

Edit: Mitchell on demand is giving me nothing as far as CKP and CAS ranges. Ugh. It tells me you need a scan tool to test them. sorry

The 420A when the key is turn to the ON position but the 4G63 primes when it is cranking.

I tested the CPS and it is indeed dead :(

I need a pigtail for the CPS but cannot locate one or Im not looking in the right places

My 4g63 primes before cranking. Maybe it's because I have a Wally but I'm positive it primes in the on position

Is your wally rewired? If so then yes it will prime when in the ON position

No but also do have a bosch in-line 055

Hmm, From the tech books a STOCK 4g63 primes when its cranking instead of when first put in the on position.

OK guys! I figured it out.

For future reference to all 420A 95-96 users, These are the part numbers to look for when you need a Crankshaft Position Sensor Pigtail.

Napa = Part Number: ECH EC235

rockauto.com = Part number: 1P1080

AutoZone = part number: 445

Cheapest one ive seen is napa

So did the CPS take care of the problem? Or were you referring to the prices and part numbers for them when you said you figured it out?
