Okay so my engine blew the other day after owning my 99 gsx only 2 months and running it completely stock. Im 18 and in college and I don't NEED it as a daily driver at the moment. The car still starts but makes a very loud grinding and squeaking noise... haven't taken it apart yet but my mechanic said its probably a spun rod or crank bearing and that it wouldn't be able to be rebuilt most likely. This was probably caused by the low oil pressure the car was sometimes having (which I took the car to the small dealership I bought it from stupidly and they didn't fix the problem) lesson learned... now I am wondering if I need a new engine or a rebuild would be possible, and whether it would be a better route to do a 6 bolt swap. Like I said before I dont nneeeed the car now and my options right now since I don't have much money being in college are looking for a good 6 bolt and doing some work to it or taking iit to a shop and having them bone me on the price of a new engine or (if its possible) a rebuild. What's the best route to take?

i personally never had any problems with with seven bolt, i run i 2.3 stroked seven bolt in my car. either way you go 6 bolt or seven bolt id say youd be safe. the labor from taking it to a shop is whats going to be the expensive part. if you have time on weekends and a place to work on it id say do it yourself buy a Manuel, 4g63ts arent the hardest engine to rebiuld just have to take your time and get the timing correct
good luck man hope ya get it going!!

Pull the pan & head and verify exactly what happened. IMO, there is nothing wrong with rebuilding your 7-bolt unless of course its completely trashed. Save yourself the $, salvage what you can and make it better than before. :hmm:

Also, I'm pretty sure your block has the thrust bearing revision. So, you have that going for you also.

Stock 6v7, the 6 bolt is stouter but unless youre planning on over 400 hp, find a 7 bolt and be happy youre not rebuilding or swapping out parts. And if you decide to build it, a built 7 bolt can and has handled as much as a built 6

I know it has been said above....

But untill you crack the engine open, and post pics of the damage, no way of telling what is good and what is not.

Thanks for the help guys! Well at least I know now I wont be forced into a 6 bolt bc I don't have the funds for over 400hp right now. Im gonna see what the stealership can do for me as far as money goes and if its not enough for a new engine I will be tearing mine apart and posting pics in the near future!
Hopefully its not beyond repair...

Why go to the "stealership"?

Check with the supporting vendors here if you want a crate engine.

Check Vendors like JAM, Force Engineering, SIM, Magnus among others.

As in giving me money because they sold me the car w low oil pressure they I took back under warranty to be fixed like 4 times and they didn't fix it.... then the engine went. No way I'd ever bring my car there to be worked on again or buy anything off them, I just brought it there before bc it was under "warranty" and I didn't have the money to fix it myself...

You can find a 2g 7bolt shortblock all day here in michigan for under 300$ id just rebuild yours if you can or just throw a new shortblock in it and drive it. But it really depwnds how much you wanna spend I guess.

Thanks for the input dudes! Im sending a letter of complaint to DMV because this was the absolute worst dealership I've ever seen so if they don't do anything for me I will probably rebuild it, and hopefully still havemoney for some parts.

Or better yet sue them and get even more money to do stupid stuff to your car....:D

If you do have to replace the motor, i would recommend a six bolt. Less things to worry about. 7 bolts tend to screw you over with crankwalk after a while

First of all, for the millionth time, crankwalk was not that big of a problem. It was blown way out of proportion.

Second of all, he has a '99, so it has the three piece main bearings, which where are not known to walk

It shouldn't matter which motor you go with. Most pale prefer 6 bolt because of stronger parts. Just keep in mind that a 6 bolt can experience crankwalk just as easily as a 7 bolt. It all depends on your routine upkeep. You can probably get a 7 bolt for cheaper since so many people are wanting a 6 bolt for this same illusion.

Seriously. I have seen one 7 bolt walk, and from the looks of the 95 talon its in, no wonder. The biggest downside to a 7 bolt is the rods and pistons. The rods are weaker, and the top ringlands on the pistons are smaller

You have a 99 7 bolt. Therefore you have the split thrust bearing design and don't need to worry about crankwalk. Don't even bother sourcing a 6 bolt block as there would be no gain. Freshen up your current shortblock or build it for you goals and call it a weekend!

Thanks dont really know the specifics of the designs yet I've only had my car about 2 months and am new to the dsm scene.
If they don't give me a new engine or cash to pay for a rebuild I am going to send a complaint to DMV bc I shouldn't have to pay for it when I've had the car only 2 months and its had low oil pressure since I bought it which I would've gotten fixed on my own terms but I was broke and it was under warranty, so since they didn't fix it and it blew its on them tto fix it.

Is there a lemon law where your at? I know here in Ohio, if a motor were to blow that quickly, the dealership would either have to fix it or replace the car, especially if there is a warranty. Besides, if you bought the warranty, they should be replacing the motor under warranty anyways.

7 bolts are great motors if you get a decent shop to rebuild it. Their is no need to do the swap. It is a lot of work to do the swap. If you can pull the motor and strip off everything you need to drop it off at a good race shop. They should be able to do a rebuild for 1 or 2 G's. Depending on what all you going to replace and upgrade. I would just work with what you have. You don't need to do a swap.

Thanks for the help, I heard back from DMV and I don't have a case bc I never recieved reciepts from when the car was there "proving" the car was there and worked on :ohdamn: Im just going to cut my losses I guess and I will be pulling the engine and rebuilding/building it as a project with my dad. Running my moms old xterra as a DD at the moment ha. Ill post up pics of the damage once I get it apart. Not too sure what im getting myself into but its a learning experience I guess :hmm:
