Ottawa,
Headed out a couple days ago on my way to work, and noticed that the first shift of my auto tranny seemed to be very hard, but didn't really think anything of it at the time. A little further down the road I began to notice an increasingly strong "burning" smell, that became so bad, it almost made me feel sick.

I obviously pulled the car over and shut it off, checked under the hood, but there was no smoke, and everything in the engine seemed to check out, and the smell seemed strongest coming from the vents inside the car.

Limped it the last half a mile to work, and then noticed when heading home that first, when putting the car into reverse from park, it slams really hard into gear. Also, when driving, it now seems I only have one gear, as the transmission does not shift, nor does the torque converter lock up at all (regardless of whether or not the OD button on the shifter is engaged). I can manually engage the car in L, 2 or D and it will move forward in each, but they all seem to be engaging the same gear (something higher than L), which makes getting the car moving from a stop, much slower than normal.

I know that if there is a problem with the TCU it will put the car into 'limp mode', but does this not usually throw a CEL as well? I checked the tranny fluid, and it still is at a good level, and is not dirty or 'burnt'.

Does anyone have any input on whether I'm looking at an issue with the TCU, End clutches, or the transmission itself?

The smell coming from the vents is the TCU board burning..This put the car in limp mode..
Take out the TCU, take off the cover and you will find the problem...Replace it and all should be good...
