1G question for the auto awd users...bad tranny or tcu maby

so i need some help from the auto awd drivers. im looking in to a new talon for a dd its a 92 awd auto. its super clean and very stock. but the problem is is that it seems to bee stuck in third. i will go into reverse neutral and drive but only into third. i has almost no power till u get going the reason i think its stuck in third is i got it up to 35 in town and it never shifted and was at low rpms. i really want this car but only if its like the tcu or someting simple. any i ideas would be awesome or things to check out. i dont know any thing about autos all my car are 5 speeds this will be a car me and the wife can drive.
 
Another thing is that two transmission plugs (the plug that has the two wires attached to each pulse generator) and the one that looks like it might have been switched with its respective mate .. and this will shove it into the 3rd gear and reverse "limp mode"
 
Could be stripped clutch packs...bad toque converter, etc. I had a long drawn out issue regarding the tranny...new TCU didnt work. Ended up tearing it all down to find bare metal friction discs, broken band, and after piecing it all back together along with a new torque converter, only then was the problem solved.
 
forcedfour.com sells shiftboxes that can eliminate the TCU ... and give you total programability of shifting...I'd do that if it were me....
 
buy the car, send core to buschur for a core to receive a clutchless 4 speed! thats what im in the process of doing, look into it!
 
Like others have already said, its probably the tcu....Did you open it up yet ?

so i ended up getting the car already poped the tcu out and checked it out. the caps were leaking mainly the big black cap. other then that car runs great and is super clean. it defenetly wasnt a bad trade speaking i traded a beat a$$ 77 chevy 4x4 for it.
 
ok i got an tcu from some one on here it looks brand new it so clean but didnt fix my problem so i tried checking for codes and theres no signal to the tcu my multi meter dosnt move at all. so i pluged the old tcu in and same thing so does any one have any ideas as to what is going on. im gona pull this new tcu and look at it again so if i didnt look hard enough.

oh ya and the a\t fuse is not blown.

any ideas why i wouldnt be getting power to my tcu bad ground maby. i hooked my mutimeter up to the pins to test my ecu it pulsed fine so my multimeter isnt dead.

no ideas not even a thought this place has been my savior dont let me down now. and i checked out the tcu again and it looks brand new like shinny new no leaking caps its perfect. is there a way to test if im not getting power to he tcu?
 
Check Fuse number 19 - 10 Amp.

If the fuse is fine.

Check power.

Pins
10 Red-Black + Fuse 19 - 10 Amp

If you have power

Then check secondary power and grounds (Key on):

Pins
1 Black (Ground)
62 Black (Ground)
104 Blue-Black (Power)
105 Black (Ground)
109 Blue-Black (Power)
110 Black (Ground)

If all is well....

Suspect the inhibitor switch.
Check the following pins on the TCU for voltage :

Pins
51 Black-Yellow - Park
52 Red-Yellow - Reverse
53 Black-White - Neutral
54 Yellow - Drive
55 Yellow-Black - 2
56 Yellow-Red - Low

Do so by selecting the respective gear on the shifter and using your ohmmeter to check for voltage

Rule out electronic issues before mechanical in my opinion. But as stated above, check to see if the harnesses at the transmission are swapped.

Do you have the ignition turned to on when you check for codes ?
Are you sure the meter is turned to the correct setting ?
 
Do you have the same information for a 2g. I'm having the same issue. Also on mine the A/T Temp light comes on dimly while reving the engine. Does that mean something? I have swapped the TCU, and I'm certain all my plugs are in the right spots as the car operated normally for many miles as is. Fluid and filter are new.

gdnf2et yes my ignition is on and its the same setting as an ecu right? if so ya its on the right setting.

92talonawd thank u for the leads ill start checking it out tomorrow i have a day off.

Thanks a bunch for that diagram. I'm assuming I should follow the same diagnostic procedure? That's a nice diagram this ones gettin printed for future reference, the color ones are so easy to follow.
 
Using a troubleshooting process similar to the above. Essentially just change the pins to the ones that apply to the 2g TCU. Look at whatever supplies power to the TCO and anything that would provide essential operating feedback. Like the Inhibitor switch etc. etc...
 
ok so i went and tested the pin i have power to my fuse and my main power pin #10 red/black.
but Pins
1 Black (Ground)
62 Black (Ground)
104 Blue-Black (Power)
105 Black (Ground)
109 Blue-Black (Power)
110 Black (Ground)
i couldnt get any readings at all so according to the daigram those wires lead to the inhibitor right? so where is the inhibitor located and any one have any leads on where to get a new one.

On the transmission.

First I would check for continuity between pins 109/104 and pin 51 with the car in park.

Pins 109 and 104 supply power to the inhibitor. The inhibitor then relays shifter location by back feeding that power to Pins:

51 Black-Yellow - Park
52 Red-Yellow - Reverse
53 Black-White - Neutral
54 Yellow - Drive
55 Yellow-Black - 2
56 Yellow-Red - Low

Also check voltage on those pins. Ground one lead on your multimeter and pop the other into either 109 or 104.

It could be that the TCU is not supplying power to the switch, I'm not sure the voltage. Hopefully someone can shed light on it.
 
i have no voltage to pins 109 or 104

as for continuity i put the meter to 1k on ohms and pluged on end in pin 109 the other in pin 51 and it didnt change the reading same with pin 104 and 51
