Okay, im tired of my 2nd to 3rd gear slip under WOT. Could it be a worn clutch? Would replacing the clutches possibly eliminate this slip? My tranny has 115k on it.

Mine was doing the same thing, just started out doing it in 3rd and 4th then it started to do it in 2nd a while. I just replaced my clutch like two days ago and it seems fine, My old clutch had a nice little groove all the way around the pressure plate and the disc was pretty damn thin. So to answer your question to me it sounds like your clutch is slipping.

Yeah it shifts fine under normal driving, just under full throttle. It's fairly simple to change the clutches, right? If I remember right from vfaq.com its on the passenger side and comes off a spline with ease. Hardest part was assembling it.

So your car shifts like it should without any slipping?

Mine was slipping whenever you would get on it a little, like say getting onto the freeway or trying to pass or merge. But if you took it easy you wouldnt notice at all. Well I just did my first clutch on this car and it took up my whole weekend. But I didnt have a lift or anything fancy so you might be able to do it faster. I will try to get a pic up of my old pressure plate haha. Hope that helps. Oh and there is a tech article here that helps a lot, check that out too.

Wait, are you manual or automatic? From the sounds of it you've got a 5speed. I may be utterly wrong.

I have a 5 speed. Sorry about that. I didnt notice that you were auto. I dont know if there is a difference in clutches.

Yeah they are different, no problem though. I thought it sounded like a 5speed. Changing yours involves alot more effort.

The end clutch upgrade/replacement is easy, but it fixes problems relating to OD/4th Gear.

So you've got the problem too huh? How long has yours been doing it? Im hoping that as long as I dont beat on those gears I shouldnt have to worry about losing a gear somewhere.

Installing an end clutch kit definitely won't help the 2-3 shift.

A 2-3 shift problem is related to valve body calibration, usually in conjunction with a worn out trans.

If a vehicle was driven for a while like this, it surely has internal damage that will only get worse over time.

The front clutch (third gear clutch) is also used to get reverse, so a delayed engagement into reverse and possible loss of reverse can also be a symptom.

Reverse definitely has had a delay of engagement. Can the valve body be changed or will it have to be rebuilt? Im hoping it will last for awhile, its not a bad shift and doesnt do it under normal conditions.

IPT Rocks, he'll figure it out :thumb:

Im aware of their products, particularly the rebuild kit. Is it compatible with the 4G64 tranny? Ive got no clue as to wether its the same tranny as the 420a or 4g63's.

Ive not decided on a rebuild or to start sourcing a 5speed tranny.

A translab shift improver kit may delay the inevitable, but if I were you I would probably look into a rebuild. Either way your rebuild should include a shift kit and end clutch kit.
