i just got my evo316g rebuilt with a full rebuild kit from gpopshop.com, checked the shaftplay after the install and there is very very little up and down but none in and out. i never took notice before but im getting alot of blowby from the valve cover, i dont think i had this much before the rebuild. and whenever i hit boost i hear a whinning noise from the engine area. so i checked the shaft play again and its none except for that very very little up and down. and i checked if the compressor wheel is hitting the housing and it isnt. the only other thing i can think that whinning noise could be is that i do have an exhaust leak from were the manifold connects to the turbo(one of the bolts broke off) and im sure i have boost leaks just havent checked since i had to get my car on the road asap. will check boost leaks tomorrow

hi m3racing is my nephews account but i posted this thread. anyways i checked my turbo shaftplay today and its got some in and out shaft play. very little though. and it still makess a whinning sound when i hit boost and im still getting blowby. im pretty sure i put the turbo together right. maybe i messed up somewhere

Did you check the pcv?

Another possible problem is your rings.
Where you able to use a feeler guage and check the clearance?

If it is the turbo whining, this can be caused by at least these 2 things. There might be more, but this is what I have seen from experience.

1. Crack in manifold. You can hear it whine through there.

2. Crack in turbine houseing

3. Turbo that is about to go bad (or in my case, compressor wheel snapping off).

4. Boost leak.

What turbo was on the car before? If it was the lil t25, than maybe the whine is none other than the e316g actually sucking in some air and making power with it.
As well it could be any of the above mentioned cracks in turbine/manifold as well as failing turbo
G-pop has a pretty good rep from what i can see though

Definately check for boost leaks. My pcv went bad recently after my 16g install, and it was pressurizing the valve cover. Put a new pcv in with a check valve behind it and it fixed it.

whats the purpose of the check valve? what does it look like?.... i ask cause im about to change my pcv valve cause im getting blowby with my 14b as well.

I would PM jusmx141 about whether or not you assembled the turbo right. He is extremely knowledgable when it comes to turbo assemblies and is very helpful. :thumb:

I have a broken stud off my manifold to turbo bolts. Maybe that's why I hope so

The check valve is insurance against a boost leak through the PCV valve. PCV valves are notorious for leaking boost, especially after market PCV valves. OEM PCV valves are best but even they tend to leak boost when they get dirty. The check valve is installed in the line between the PCV and manifold. Make sure the check valve is installed in the right direction so that it blocks pressure from the manifold to the PCV valve.

Wait...you rebuilt the turbo yourself using a rebuild kit??? Or did you have the turbo rebuilt by a shop? Anytime a turbo is taken apart and rebuilt it should be high speed balanced before using it.

Yeah I used a rebuild kit and did it myself. From what I've read most turbos are component balanced so there's no need to bring to a shop. From what I've read if course :)
