A couple of weeks ago, I made a thread describing how blue smoke was starting to come out of my car during high boosting, and starting from a red light. Here is the previous post.
"About a month and a half ago I started to notice a light puff of blue smoke coming from my car intermittently when pulling from a stop. Now, that puff is coming out anytime I hit the gas hard and the boost goes over 11lbs. My T25 is at 106,000 miles (top that!) and I drive my car hard, so I'm impressed it's still going. My question is, would leaky turbo seals cause the oil to come out like that for sure, or is it possible that it's valve's leaking, or leaky piston rings.
I know it seems almost obvious that it's the turbo, but I didn't have time to do a compression test this weekend, and just thought I'd ask for the hell of it. I've been testing the car out for the past week by driving under boost, and also boosting. The car still feels very strong, and when I crank up the boost, the turbo can still spike at high boost levels (17PSI) when cranked high. When driving under boost, no smoke comes out, but when I sit at a light for a few minutes, then accelerate, and floor it quickly, a bit of smoke will come out steadily from the tailpipe very lightly (I had a friend follow me to check), and soon as the BOV sounds, a bigger puff of smoke comes out, and also when I shift.
Do you think for sure it's probably the turbo, or what? I'm at my desk at work, and I'm about to order this BigT28 from Forcedperformance.com, so I just wanted some advice before I make this kind of investment."
Well, I did 2 things that were contributing to this problem. First of all, I removed the gas filter from my valve cover crankcase preasure nipple (or whatever its technically called). When I took it off, and tried to blow through it, it was hard to do! Making the hole, for the most part, a bit blocked (if your going to do that mod, make sure you check that filter regularly, cause they get blocked fast). I actually don't recommend it anymore after that happened to me. I say either put a breather filter on there, or just run a host to the ground. After I did that, I noticed the smoke had stopped for the most part. But I was still getting a smokey smell from my car after driving it, so I.....
Replaced the T-2small this weekend with the new Ported FPBig-T28! No more smoke, no more leaks, no more power loss from a bad turbo (the T-25 had a lot of play in it, and it had lost power bigtime, and was probably about to blow). With all the other mods I have done, this thing is CRAZY FAST now. People weren't kidding when they say that replacing the T-25 makes your 2nd gen feel totally different. My friend/mechanic, and I were just looking at each other in awe when we took the car for its first test run after installation. Funny thing at first is that we didn't even notice the car was driving like that at 11lbs of boost. We saw that and then cranked it up to 16lbs. DAMN, is all I have to say. This turbo is definately a beast for a daily driver, and it boosts so damn fast. When you put your foot on the gas, it's almost instant power, and the slight lag from the T-25 (and I do mean slight) does help when starting from a stop.
This turbo really gives you a smooth, but powerful ride, and the sound of the turbo is really smooth itself. It has that hollowed out quiet whistle sound, you hear on some bigger turbos. Sounds like a jet taking off. My very last speed mods that I'm going to do to this car is the fuel system, and get a 3" downpipe, and cat, and then the speed stuff will be done. So far, I've drove it hard at 16lbs, and no fuel cut yet. My Cobalt Autometer A/F Guage will be in today at the local speed store I ordered it from. Next month though, this car is going into the shop (Satan). It needs to have its timing belt done ASAP. If I wasn't scared of that T-25 blowing I would have done that first. Car now has 108,000 miles on it, and I don't know if the timing belt was ever done in it. I got it at Carmax last year and it already had 79,000 miles on it. So after all these mods, I better take care of that or this will all be in vein. $700 with new belts, waterpump and pulleys from the dealer. I asked my local DSM speed shop, and they told me a price a little higher, and decided that they are crazy so I'm taking it to the dealer.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
