I finally last night got my new turbo Td06 20g installed. I had my new 02 housing w/ external wastegate and dump installed my 660cc injectors. I couldnt wait for this day. After installation was complete car was running fine, then the tuning part begins. We do a couple of runs tuning the car to 18lbs. Its running great, a little rich at cruising speeds, but we were gonna fix that.

Upon another run, we get to a stop sign and once boost begins to build *POP*

there goes my freakin head gasket..........................................yesterday was probably one of the worst days/nights of my life.....anyways my buddy and i are gonna be doing this job, we pretty much do all the work on our cars. So this is our first time replacing a head gasket on these cars, so if anyone has any faqs or how-to-do's they could give me on this project, it would be much appreciated.

thanks again guys.

one of the biggest things is make sure you torque everything down very carefully, if you dont have a decent torque wrench get one, its worth the $$

It should be able to be done in a day. I haven't done one on my DSM yet, but I've done head gaskets on other cars. I think their might be a vfaq on it.

Are you sure it's the head gasket? Did you actually hear a loud "pop"? When an intercooler pipe blows of it makes a pop sound. Maybe you blew an IC pipe off.

When a headgasket blows there might be no sound, just bubbles coming out of the coolant overflow tank, or oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil pan. Sometimes if a headgasket blows really badly, you will hear a quick air leak sound with every compression stroke, sort of a 'tsh tsh tsh' sound. Do a compression test to make sure.

get a evo3 hewadgasket or the mls ,might be the same thing, know to be very hard to pop or destroy, please buy arp headstuds!

thanks for your replies.....

yes, i am positive its the head gasket.......the guy helping he tune this owns his own performance shop and he was in the car with me.

anyways, i've heard good things about the mitsubishi 4 layer metal headgaskets, and theres a dealership in cali that gives a dsm discount, and i can get that for 70$. Will that and arp studs be a good combo??

thanks again

Have you guyz done a compression check??Pops are almost always IC pipes. As for the Head gasket swap. Most cars are nothing like a DSM head/timingbelt R&R job.It could be loonger than a day if ya'll have never done it. :thumb:

It should take maybe 3 hr is you don't know what your doing.(thats if everything goes right) get the arp studs you wont regret it (only $100) just do the research on the timming belt and head removal. and with two people should be a walk in the park. done mine about three times and it only takes about 2 hr to do(remove head and timming and put back together.

i went to purchase some arp head studs.....but how do i know if i have a 6-bolt or 7-bolt??

i have a 92, so it could be either one right???

anyway to know?

it says the 6-bolt are 12mm and the 7 is 11mm....should i take everything apart, before buying them

How many miles on the car?? I would have the head resurfaced if I were you. Maybe look into replacing the valve stem seals as well while you have it apart. Use some copper spray-a-gasket on the head gasket when you put it back together. And definately definately buy some ARP's. :thumb:

Do a compression test . I dont care who was in the car with you . Running on street gas at 18 psi can blow a headgasket no doubt but you are going to hear it after the initial pop . . Do a compression test ? Do you have any symptoms ? Water in the oil ? With cold startup and engine running do air bubbles belch out of the removed radiater fill, with cap off? A compression test will tell . This sounds just liek a intercooler pipe ,happened to me right after I put my evo on . Scared me to death . I was thinking how bad it would be to loose my daily driver . Do a compression test :thumb:
