Best timing belt?

I have always used blue Gates racing timing belts, the one time I used some no name brand car jumped timing go figure.

The Gates Racing kevlar timing belt is what I'm running now & I'm very pleased with it.Do yourself a favor & don't waste your money on a NAPA timing belt because there junk had one shred on me with about 35,000 miles on it.

Nate, I'll have to disagree, I personally haven't had any issues using a part store brand water pump mainly due to the fact it's very simple and if it did happen to fail, it's not going to break anything other than making you start to over heat.

Personal experience but you cannot go wrong with OEM.

As for the belt, stick to a full OEM timing kit. Kevlar belts are good when you are making a large amount of power and are becoming concerned about sheering teeth off. All forms of belts should be replaced at the standard 60k regardless of what they are rated for especially seeing as the other components need to be replaced as well.

There are actually quite a few threads up dealing with the different timing belts which you must not have found during your searching...

Edit:
I would say that depending on how your drive your vehicle along with the power it makes really determines when the belt should be changed. 60k on a stock car shifting at 5000RPM it's life has a different affect on the belt than someone taking it to a 9000k RPM red line making 600hp which has a different affect on the belt.

This.

I feel like people confuse us with other interference motors. Unlike most of those vehicles, our water pump does not run off the timing belt. The reason for the recommendation of doing the water pump on those vehicles is so that if it seizes or breaks it will also throw off timing. Our vehicle has a puller driven pump off the crank. Yes it is good to replace it around the same time as the timing belt for maintenance interval purposes, but when it does go, as stated, we simply overheat and anyone who pays attention enough to their gauges to see the temperatue rising should know to kill the car right there.

I agree 100%. I use oem for belts and topline waterpumps, its hard to mess up such a simple mechanical part and I love the sarcasm and subtle hints in your post.:thumb: Whats up with ppl not using the search function? Search is even lit up in yellow..LOL..Oh well.

Its a personal choice but ever since my first timing belt from oriellys shredded off I only use gates but again its only my personal choice. However Mitsubishi OEM work just as good.

Was it the belts' fault that it jumped time? Did the belt fail? Or did something else cause the failure, such as installation error? Only way a belt fails is if the teeth rip off of it.

Hmmm....my NAPA belt held for about 200 passes and 50 or so of those were to 9k rpm and 130+mph. Maybe you got a bad one?

Aren't NAPA's manufactured by GATES?

I call it install/abuse error, or something misaligned if one shredded....and 35K would be a decent life even if it was abused or installed incorrectly.

Why, it's always a good idea to pull the upper cover off once in awhile to check the belt on a regular prevent maintenance basis.

Not a problem. I'm personally using an OEM water pump but I haven't really heard anything bad about non-OEM water pumps. There's one way to save ~ $50.

FWIW, i run a $35 autozone pump to 8K rpm and haven't had issues so far. The casting quality seems like a cheap POS, but if it works, it works.
